Pretty excited for the opener I hope it's better than last year's. Who's hunting the opener?

Can't wait to skin some bunnies! (Waiting for someone to make fun of my gloves.) July 1 is a work day for me so I'll have to wait til Friday. Gives us something to shoot!

I'm all about fileting them.......No gloves needed, no meat wasted........ ;)
Just skin, take back straps, de-bone the hindquarters and don't even bother gutting them, right?

You guys don't check the liver for spots?
That's one of the reasons I would gut, to check the liver. I once got one that looked real bad, had a liver that looked more sketchy than David Hasselhoff's. I left it for the yotes. But I've been told it doesn't matter, u can cook it out. Maybe someone else has more wisdom.

Good points. Forgot about tularemia. I looked on several sources and here is what I picked up: white or light spots on the liver are a good way to confirm the disease. Also, symptoms in a rabbit include listlessness, so if the rabbit seems less alert or less active, that is a tip off.

However, the disease is transmitted by handling an infected animal without gloves, NOT by eating well cooked meat from an infected animal. Proper cooking kills the bacteria.
So, if you gut it with bare hands and then cook it well, you've still been exposed. If you want to be sure, then use gloves to clean it, cook the rabbit well, and you don't need to worry about inspecting the liver. Or inspect the liver, but if you find spots after you've handled the meat, it does you no good to throw out the meat: you still need to call the doctor.

Here's your chances of getting Tularemia........I think I'd be more fearful of ticks & flies........Just sayin'

ps.....One case in San Diego Co. in 10 years. And it doesn't say how it was contracted.

I'm off on Friday so I'm hoping to get some cottontails. Last year got a Jack... Will pass on that this year. I'm going to try Sprigs gutless method.

Hope I can within the next few weeks. Need to find a place to hunt. The wildlife area 5 minutes from my house is closed from February to the end of August. :'(

Maybe I will wear gloves............. :-\
