new hunter question: where to register for draws?

@Zak I'm so new to hunting I don't know what I don't know. Thanks everyone for the feedback. This is super helpful. Now I'm checking out gohunt.com, and the Montana PDF was super useful as well, Thanks!

    Lockdown AGAIN

They also canceled school for LA and SD counties for the fall. Teachers will all still get paid, and fine, fair enough, but the quality of education drops dramatically. Working and keeping the kids constructively engaged is a nightmare. On the bright side we started hunting because there wasn't...

new hunter question: where to register for draws?

I'm new to hunting, but I get that you need tags, and for some species tags are allocated on a point system. I'm probably not ready to go out and get an Elk but at some point I will, and I will want to have points to apply to that goal. What states should I be applying to and accruing points...

Family trout fishing trip to mammoth

Ahhh...yeah! Looks like a great family trip, and those trout look nice!

    Newsome recall

@cadeerhunter I don't have a dog in this fight. No strong views one way or the other. I do think there isn't a "they" only an "us." If we the people get the votes than he has to go, but if we don't he doesn't. The politicians of both parties don't control us...we control them. Or we should...

    BF Limits

Wow! Lil Drew is never going to forget that day. I think you might have set the fishing hook deep in him. Good for you and good for him! I think you inspired me to take the day off and head down to SD for a day of fishing.

Does anyone actually find hunting/outdoor buddies this way?

@JLerch Sounds good. Saturday I'm scouting trailheads north of Glendale. Let's DM each other if we find something. I'm using OnX, so that should make it easy to leave waypoints.

Does anyone actually find hunting/outdoor buddies this way?

@JLerch I'm right here with you. Just started hunting, and got pointed here by an acquaintance who hunts. He hunts turkey and has private land where they are plentiful. I'm trying to figure out how to get rabbits, so there is more of an exchange. I think when people see you want to...

Everyone has to start somewhere (Noobs)

@fish impaler To be honest - tasted pretty good. LIke a chicken thigh, but a tougher. I guess it proves the old saying "everything tastes good deep fried."

Everyone has to start somewhere (Noobs)

Thank you everyone for the feedback. No ground squirrels, at all, ever. Got it! As long as we survive it was a great learning experience:)

Everyone has to start somewhere (Noobs)

Went hunting for the first time this weekend. We went for rabbits, but ended up getting ground squirrels. We had watched Meateater Season 8 episode 1, so we knew squirrels are on the menu for people, but it was a first. My sons skinned, cleaned and deep fried the squirrels with enthusiasm. A...

    Common Shooting Mistakes

@ilovesprig "maintained Lead, Spot Shooting, Pull-Away, and Swing-Through" This was super useful. I learned rifle marksmanship in the Marines, so I taught my kids with iron sites before letting them use scopes, but I don't have any experience with shotguns. We will start educating ourselves on...

The lie of Black Lives Matter

@SteveHazard Yes to hunter safety, and no to Pendleton (I heard they canceled guest hunting privileges). I have a friend who is just finishing up a tour as drill instructor, but he's shipping out to Japan in August, so that window is a bit limited if it is an option. @surfcity was generous...

The lie of Black Lives Matter

@surfcity Re:free speech - we are saying the same thing. I think criminalizing any form of speech is a violation of the constitution (except the fire in a movie theater example). I'm happy we are on the same page on these points!

The lie of Black Lives Matter

@surfcity I thought I would put together a list of things we probably agree on: Corporatist are selling our country out for Chinese money Illegal immigration hurts teens looking for jobs, and take benefits meant for Americans You can’t have freedom of speech and hate speech at the same time...

The lie of Black Lives Matter

@WaterDog I think what you are describing is totally reasonable for people like you and me. However, referencing the twins' video - that poor man in the hotel was drunk, and he tried to comply and was still killed. Or people with psychiatric problems who can't comply, but shouldn't lose their...

The lie of Black Lives Matter

I’ve been busy with work, but I thought I’d take a few minutes to delineate the structural and logical fallacies of the twins’ video. The core argument the twins make and illustrate is that the police unnecessarily kill white people as well, so police violence isn’t necessarily targeted at black...

The lie of Black Lives Matter

@SteveHazard I live in Los Angeles. The areas I've been looking into are Riverside and and Kern County, but SD works just as well. I have two boys 12 & 14 who are fired up to learn to hunt. We just bought 12ga semis for rabbits and turkeys, and maybe ducks when the season comes.

The lie of Black Lives Matter

@surfcity, thanks for asking. This topic strikes me as one that will not be resolved in this forum. I'm also not a person who wants to spend time debating societal ills with people who have not yet become friends. My dad would call that "pissing into the wind." Instead, I want to figure out...

The lie of Black Lives Matter

Hi, Jason here. I just joined the site at the invitation of a friend. I'm African American, if that matter, and I have to say I disagree with everything written in the thread. I also think that everyone everywhere should be entitled to free speech no matter what they are saying. I look...
