Quail and chukar - strategy question

Ha! I maybe a lousy wing shot but I draw the line at ground sluicing birds. It was a shot at the slope below the birds cause I had to get them to break up....

Quail and chukar - strategy question

Last week, I spotted a small covey of quail on the move toward thick manzanita, I shot way low of them and got them to flush in different directions. My dog was then able to point a single that I took, I missed on 2 others. In the past I have run at chukar to try and get them to flush and they...

    Game vest

I feel like I'm back in the Infantry with my game vest: 3 small water bottles, 2 for the dog,1 for me. Shells , a 22 revolver, a monocular, a small knife, matches, hemostat for thorns, quail call and the garmin hand control for the dog collar, sometimes a tasty Snickers. I have a 25 year old...

    D16 rifle started today?

Yep it was saturday early afternoon when someone was shooting pistols up by Palomar but the Does still came out. Could be the shots kept the Bucks hunkered down but the 2 adjoining ranches each had a single shot yesterday around 0645 so someone got a Buck

    D16 rifle started today?

We were on a ranch near Mt Palomar. Saw 2 does each day and a Spike but no adult Buck. Saw one lousy Mntn Quail that disappeared before me eyes and a Bobcat hunting acorn fed squirrels. Heard of many Mntn Lion sightings on ranch and area. Much Turkey gobbling in the area.

    Quail Season

I hunted for birds at one of my D-14 spots this morning. Lots of hunters but no birds seen or heard. No shots heard either. Saw a Doe.

Every year it gets tougher to follow my Dog up and down the hills after birds but I live for Upland season. Good Luck to all.

Ever been involved in hunting accident?

Some years back I caught a #6 pellet in me forearm, my buddy was shooting a running Jack rabbit and I was behind some creosote at 40 yards. It smarted some and barely broke skin, I popped it out and it was a lesson learned....

    Ammo shortage

Longshoremens Unions won't let the Berths/shipyards deviate on shifts, breaks... even if the cargo ships are backed up, they call the shots. Containers have to be put on rail or on the road to free up yard space for next ship to come in and unload.

    Afghanistan anyone

How the hell are they vetting the afghans that are being let into this country? US authorities cant go talk to neighbors, they cant talk to the local police or sources. They can do database searches but these could be new players who aren't in the system as of yet. Its a bad scenario. There...

    Afghanistan anyone

The withdrawal had to happen, but this was the greatest planning and intelligence blunder since WW ll. There is a right and wrong way of doing things and this was the worst. I don't know what the hell the military brass was thinking when they went along with this timetable. Leaving all that...

    Sale

Pictures are worth a million bucks and ilovesprig's pics of the 60s and 70s always take me back just by looking at the clothes and cars and scenery of some spots that I have hunted (not to mention the birds and dogs) . ilovesprig's pictures and stories would make a great "Hunts of SoCal" book.

Calls from the wilderness....... What drives you!

The smell and feel of a late season bird hunt, when there is mist and you can smell cold humid herbs and earth and you take that last gulp of coffee before you exit the truck to put the collar on and release your Doggo.
