No, as long as you get a good zero. He was maybe confusing it with a second focal plane scope which the hash marks (not zero) will be effected by the power you are zoomed to.

Welcome! If there are people there there are turkeys there. Its frustrating but learning how to hunt in and around others is part of the game. I'd go right back to where you found them and try to hunt mid week or later on in the day if you want to avoid the crowds. It'll keep getting less...
