Welcome Nate! I would also recommend going to the imperial valley, best area for them. Also, I would advise against hunting turkey in the fall here in SD. We have had some bad recruitment years recently and their numbers are down.
Nice! What part of Southern Utah are you in? Use to go to cedar city and brian head a lot in the fall-spring. Never hunted there though, unfortunately.
If they were on the public land, it's probably the same type of people that leave piles of trash laying after they're done shooting and get the whole spot closed for good.
There's some nice bucks around here, biggest one I've seen was in an alfalfa field in Temecula...looked like he had been eating it since he was born. However, most of the ones I've seen are forks.
