How do people like to hunt deer in southern California?

San Diego mule deer hunting? Hike out, sit down, glass, relax..... (pause for a real long time, nap, contemplate on life, check wind, watch out for ants and ticks).... spot, stalk... and... crap, out of water. lol! J/k. It is a lot different than hunting white tail in West Virginia (where they...

    pigs in sandiego county

Hunting those dang hogs is like hunting a ghost! I spent a year hunting and tracking them. Closest I've got was fresh turned dirt and poop near the Descanso area. I had to hike about an hour in before I saw that sign. Then it went cold. I've seen anything close to that day in over 2 years. Maybe...

    D-16 Deer Tags???

AO is the bowhunting versus of the D-16. Same season, same regs (fork bucks and up) and same area. I hate rifle season because my boy and I had too many close calls of snapping rounds over head. Careful out there!

    Muley Herd Health

I went out with the family camping about a month ago. I saw a good amount of does and spikes running around. I also saw forks with velvet still. I hate hunting dogs, but I think the coyotes are a big reason for low deer populations versus a dry environment. I hit a fawn call and I hear the...

Cleveland National Forest - Booby Traps

I got ya Socalhntr. I felt it should be clarified anyways. You know how it is in forums. Post here and post there with a piece of the story here and a piece there, pretty soon it gets confusing and convoluted. I usually write chronologically as it happens. But responding back and forth, gets...

    Stolen Tree Stand

We as hunters are a small community to start with here in California. We already have a bunch of others who do not agree with our passion of hunting. We need to respect the rights and property of others. If it is a hunter that is stealing another hunter's equipment, that is not cool. If you...

    Mtn bike for Deer

LMAO! That is motivating! lol! I am so with that guy. That reminds me of when my family and I go to West Virginia during deer season and I see deer strapped on roofs, hoods, trailers of all kinds of vehicles driving through town (could you imagine a Toyota Prius with a deer strapped on the...

I wish they would come out with muley rut facts

I agree with you 100%. Last night I sent an email to the editor of California Game and Fish. I stated no one has any info on mule deers in California (the west-west, lol!) let alone SoCal mule deer. I told them there was a big, little niche of SoCal mule deer hunters that benefit from that...

Opening day D16 one young buck one old buck

Great job! Nice pics! Was this in the CNF? Reason I was asking was that I have not yet observed any rutting behavior from bucks as of yet. This would be great intell for the CNF area. I still saw does grouped together with no buck pursuers (about two weeks ago) around Julian. Again, wow! I...

    A-22 1st Half Success Stories?

I went out and did not tag out during the 1st half of A-22. Tried to get out there a few times before rifle season. I had close calls, but no success. Anyone have any pics or stories of their success?

    Rabbit Hunting!

I am the Job (jobe) of hunting, lol! When I go out to for one thing, see a bunch of the other. Then when I switch up (that point of "heck with this, let's do that because I just saw a bunch of them") the other stuff is all gone! Like those darn turkey and deer switch offs, lol! I noticed the...

Cleveland National Forest - Booby Traps

@Socalhntr - we (I was) bow hunting earlier in the morning (dawn). Saw some does but no shot. My son doesn't have an A-22 tag, so we decided to pull the 22lr (that is a MP 15-22, 22lr that we have) out and go squirrel hunting/ scouting. We went were I always see squirrels (that whole area is...

    Rabbit Hunting!

I read somewhere in a book I got about walking slowly then pausing from time to time. I guess it is because rabbits freeze when they are threatened and then run when you pause because it makes them think they've been made. I tried that technique and they bolt like greased lightening! Too quick...

    Rabbit Hunting!

Here is a question for the masses that I think would benefit a lot of folks. Do you use dogs or walk for rabbits? Which do you prefer? If no dogs, what is your method of march for rabbits? Time of day? Thanks in advance for your responses!

    No rut or what???

I read somewhere, mule deer usually go into rut around December/ Jan time frame. I read off the DFG website Q&A section, hunting seasons are not during actual rut season to make more opportunities to hunt versus hunting success. Sucks, but true. Which makes sense that A-22 ends December 31st.
