I hunted this morning but forgot the lucky boxes. No bucks showed up. At about 9:30 I turned on the video camera and Foxpro. I ran it for 40 minutes trying different calls and taking breaks in between. I spot a lone coyote at 150 yards looking around for the sound. He was very timid and didn’t want to come in. I turned it back on Kitten in Distress and he swung around wide and got down wind of me. He stop at 34 yards and put his nose up in the air while moving his head side to side. He was looking right in my direction and I didn’t have a shot. He winded me a little, turned and trotted off to about 100 yards and sat down staring in my direction. Shoot ! I blew it. I thought he was going to take the 20 yard trail to the caller and give me a clean shot and now I missed my chance.
The staring contest went on for another 20 minutes. Then he finally started to move and took the same trail coming back around down wind. He did the exact same thing stopping at 34 yards and I almost let him walk off. When I saw he was leaving again I drew back and tried to stop him at 40 yards. He slowed down but didn’t really stop. I guessed the yardage at 40 but by the time I let it go he was at 45. So I hit him low and back. He ran hard and fast for 100 yards until he was out of view . There was good blood on the arrow and I got on a light blood trail. After 100 yards he slowed down and there was blood everywhere. The Rage had done its job well and I knew I would find him up ahead. He went about 150 yards total. It was an awesome 30 minute hunt playing cat and mouse and coming out on top.
