So my daughter & I took my dog out today to look for quail, and have some fun running. She held on a Bush until I gave the single to flush.6 giant quail scattered right at shooting height. As we came around a bend my daughter yelled at me to watch out. Out of reaction I jumped back, and when I looked down I saw my worst fear. A rattle snake. This was the first time I've ever came across one without warning. He didn't rattle or move. After this, I will be investing in some snake boots & snake awareness training for my dog.

Dog training as well as the shot for the dogs is all well worth it. My dog hates snakes after traing 2 times he will find yhem at about 10 yards and bark quietly and let me know. I think he has found as many snakes as quail coveys. Talk to high on kennels (snake charmer/Fred) he had a great snake avoidance class

I too almost had a bad day not too long ago. Got out of my truck to do a hike, as I got my pack out of my back seat I hear a rattle and look down, not 4 inches from my boot was a little rattle snake. Luckily he didn't want to bite, so he took shelter under my tire. RIP rattlesnake.

YIKES!!.........Did you send him to his maker? (Southern Pacific)............
I actually left it alone. It did cross my mind on making him lunch, but my daughter isn't old enough to drive yet, & I didn't want to take any chance's on making an "almost bad day" into a really bad day.

Yep don't leave home without my snake gators ever! I've been hit twice while wearing them gets you a little jumpy but your all good in the hood.

Luckily both my dogs have the vac and know to stay away. One bays and the other just slowly steps back and growls......don't forget you can't kill the red ones.....rattlers need water so becareful around dry or near dry creek bottoms. And watch out for the blind strike on your dog no training can help those situations just the vac at that point. And if you do shoot the snake make sure your bird dog is on a leash otherwise he'll go face first into the shot snake trying to retrieve what you shot.....not good a dead snake still has its venom.
I've seen two dogs get hit one while running by a bush and got hit in the back paw almost a dry bite but dog lived due to the vac. The other a lab, no vac but got hit in the chest, it hit the skin folds and didn't get into any muscle had a cortisone shot and good to go!

That's why God invented rocks and long sticks.......... ;D

ps....I never scout nowadays without a walking cane....And know, it's not because of old age.... :D

My brother almost stepped on ones head couple months ago. It was just sticking its body out about 4 to 5 inches. Surprised it didn't bite him. Then it was turned into an appetizer.
