A buddy of mine and I beat the odds and drew random tags much earlier than we had expected. The Kaibab plateau has been one of my favorites since the early 90's...so off we went! In short, the herd numbers were pretty good...but the overall age class was way down. Finding bucks that the Kaibab is famous for was almost impossible. We hunted two weeks and, although we did locate two VERY nice bucks, we never could get the stars to line up for either one of them. The largest one was a true 200" class buck - big, heavy and with extras! For those of you familiar with this area...you know how disappointing it is to just find a couple bucks of that caliber after two solid weeks! Anyways, I did spot a good buck towards the end off the season and set up on him just above where I thought he was bedding. First evening, the dang thing came out much higher than I thought and a look over my shoulder found me staring and him...staring right back at me. Needless to say, he was gone in a flash! I rolled the dice and set up a little higher on the ridge the next evening and the plan worked to perfection. Not what the Kaibab is famous for...but I came home with a very nice buck, a bunch of venison and a ton of great memories!
