Building a gun safe

So I am bursting at the seams when it comes to guns. I need a bigger safe! Rather than buy on Tru-Duct is going to Build one. All the materials are in order we should be able to start it today. I will take pictures and document the build. In the end it will be powder coated, lined with 3/4 plywood, built out of 1/4" steel plate and will be 4' wide by 3' deep. It will require a lot of time and power tools to break into this thing. Just for fun here is the rough drawing I did on my desk lol there will be some redneck engineering. You will be impressed with the results. This is the first time in a year my shop has slowed down time to have a little fun.

1/4" steel, that would make it a VAULT! Only thing better would be AR500 steel.
Curious, why plywood? Generally cement board is used for the increased fire ratings.

We are going to do fire board and then ply wood. The wood is some can make the racks etc.

Roger that. Thoughts on locks? Internal hinges? Thought about rhino lining?

It will get powder coated at SD Powder Coating, probably black. As for hinges there will be 3 per door they are super heavy duty $35 a piece. I am going to use 2 round locks keyed the same. The same locks you see on the back of utility truck doors. Basically it will take power tools and a lot of time to break into this thing. If someone is able to get in they deserve the guns.

Just doing the poundage on the 1/4 plate I will use it will be around 1,300 lbs. that doesn't include the fire board etc. but right about there. One 4x10 sheet of 1/4" plate is around 460 lbs. I am using 4 sheets for the project but there will be a lot of scrap I will use for my structural steel division. This will be a safe I have for the rest of my life I want to do it right.

Hey Drew, this looks like it is going to be an awesome build! Very excited to see pictures, but... to be honest, I'm not sure you should post them. At least, don't post detailed views of that thing so any wanna be low life can analyze weak points or figure out what tools would be needed to break into this thing. Public forum, pics of your safe, maybe even a few posts down the road showing your in the field.. and not a home, could be a bad recipe. Sorry, my brain just thinks this way. People suck!

man if somebody on the internet happens to google this stuff to analyze some drawings and statements in order to identify their next target of a theft of call it 5-10k of fire arms....and then still successfully commits the crime.

For most safes, where you place them (accessibility to sides and back, and ability to tip it over) has as much to do with a safe's vulnerability to break-in as its construction. With the very heavy plates all around, that's less of a concern to you but it's still important.

This one will be against a wall and it will be anchored to concrete. During fabrication yesterday it took 3 guys and a forklift to stand it up lol. Hopefully now that I own my house I won't be moving for a while and the thing will stay put. Not looking forward to installing it.
