Busted water tank drinkers

While out scouting I have come across 4 water tanks, none of which were functional and all look like they have been out of commission for a while.

It doesn't seem like it would take much to get them back up and running. Anyone know why they don't get fixed?

Wild guess???? Money and time. Plus the ones that give out the money don't care. That's just my thought.

Depending on where you're scouting, most were old cattle drinkers on BLM land.....Since, grazing rights have been discontinued on much of that land, they've been let go.

In the Mojave desert, cattle leases were stopped a number of years ago and BLM personnel were actually told to destroy artificial water sources in the Mojave Preserve.....Pretty sad commentary.

ps.....Guzzlers that are underground for the most part are still worked on, but it's only volunteer groups like Quail Forever that is doing it.

pss....I have a map of all the guzzlers in the Black Mt, Randsberg, and Ridgecrest areas....Pretty amazing how many were installed back in the 50's when this state was pro-hunting and relocating chukar.

I'm no expert on grazing history but it seems unlikely these were for cattle. At least one has a USFS plaque on it. I have found one that is working and has water coming in, but I don't actually see the tank, just the trough. Anyway, for the ridiculous number of tags they sell vs. the low success rate in the zone these are in...its frustrating.

you would think just for the wildlife these tanks would been maintained instead of destroyed.
It sounds counterintuitive to their supposed love of animals, but the envirofascists hate artificial water sources. It's all part of this "return to the natural state" obsession that includes dam removal and blocking infrastructure projects.

Guys it's up to us to maintained guzzlers and drinkers that are on state & federal lands.....There are over 350 in San Diego Co. alone.

If you want to get involved, contact....Quail Forever San Diego....You can see what they do and when their next work party is.

Good point, I would not be surprised if that was a factor. With all the talk about how people have stolen habitat from wildlife I would think that group would welcome the extra help.

These are D14...I would love to put in some time to help. I have looked at Cal Deer and MDF, but from what I can see they don't have much of a presence around here. Are there other volunteer organizations I might be missing?

Nothing in the D-14 zone that I know of.....I know Cal Deer is trying to start a chapter down here, but to be honest, I have no idea what they do for our deer herds.

The fore mentioned Quail Forever San Diego and the National Wild Turkey Federation San Diego....With NWTF having the largest presence by far in San Diego Co....They organize & run the Lake Sutherland turkey hunts, have a turkey tune-up, JAKES day, and Christmas turkey to vets event.

LA & the OC as far as I know, have nothing....QF does have a chapter in Riverside.

I'm down to go up and help do repairs.
