Has any body taken this yet. I wonder how they are going to govern this at the lakes, if maybe the concessionaires will ask before you buy a permit and who is going to ck or inforce it.

I took the course and received my card. Not sure who will ask for it on the lakes but law enforcement has worked the local launch ramps checking folks as they come in from the bay.

How long did it take you to do the test, what was the cost

Free...

The cops are checking on the water....

It's not a hour and done, it takes some time

It takes plenty of time and it is fairly comprehensive. I have logged a lot of time at sea just on my boat and it was a good refresher. I have my card and I have seen them check at the launch Ramps. At least on the ocean.

It was over 3 hours including the test. You can do it for free if you don't mind waiting a bit longer and sending in the application etc. I chose the easy button (they file all of your stuff and you get a temp card as soon as you complete the test) and went with this company. It was $34.95 and well worth it.

A+ Approved Boating Safety Course

I have the same takeaway as @labsrule . I have owned boats for a long time and definitely benefitted from taking the course.

I took the course when they first implemented it even though I am in the last of the required age bracket to take it.
It was free at the time except for the 10 bucks you sent in for the card.
I have had boats all my life and it was a good refresher plus I get a discount on my boat's insurance too.
I have once been checked the officer asked me even though I wasn't required to have it yet didn't bother me none.
So they do check now and then.
