Caliber for all around rifle hunting...?

Ok the time has come for me to purchase my rifle. Have the shotgun, have some pistols, but now im at the point where I want to reach out an touch some targets. Meat or metal ...

Now im definitely bias in my selection being as the first rifle I ever shot was .308 soo.. Thats the way im leaning ..
Ive shot pretty much everything from .223 to 30-06 an am comfortable with most.

Im 26 so im not rolling in doe( pun intended) but i am preparing to spend somewhere in the $4-$800 range, obviously not including optics. Just want to see if im on track here in the sense that ill be able to hunt everything from white tail to bears , from the people ive talked to .308 winchester will get it done..

Truth or smoke?

Have it narrowed to either :
Remington 700
Winchester xpr or
Savage axis. (All in .308)

This is going to be a pretty social gun, my old lady will be shooting this as well so this is a field gun, not some nice trophy range shooter, im looking for a reliable good shooting gun that i can beat up a bit.

If you are "rolling in the dough" you might want to aim your sights higher...

Tikka, Sako etc.

Just saying...
 
Get the Ruger American over the the axis, the Savage 11/111 Trophy Hunter XP over the XPR, plus it comes with a decent Nikon 3x9 scope. Or even the Savage 16/116 lightweight hunter. Tikka, or Bergara B-14.

I second the Savage Trophy Hunter package. It's a step above the Axis and has the Accu-trigger. The Nikon is a decent do everything scope. Most 'combo' scopes are a POS. This set up is good bang for the buck (intended).

My only concern is can your wife handle a 308 with out a brake. Either get the Savage in 6.5 or find one with a threaded barrel or both. The 6.5 should handle So Cal game just fine and there's plenty of ammo for it. Not as much as the 308, but plenty.

Nice.. I was actually looking at that as well, was unsure but ill definetly look more into detail on them now.

Perfect, exactly what i was hoping to get from this post. Of all the selections i have been looking at the axis alot but hadnt thought about the savage. Going to really give those a good once over. Not expecting to much grief over a .308 from my old lady, hoping to keep this a one or two shot day with her on this rifle but i hadnt thought that so ill definitely check that out too. Thanks
