on the mountain
Hunting rabbit and coyote. Nearly stepped on a 4 1/2 foot speckled rattler. Scared the hell out of me. Close call. What helped I was walking slow. And it was stretched out & not coiled. Darn.

you wear gaiters?
The few years I've been out scouting/hunting either on trail or bush whacking I haven't come across one. Few non venomous on the road stretched out. I figured it's because I don't walk silently. Im getting gaiters for whacking bush now.

Turtleskin gators I don't leave home without them. If you buy them thru a landscaping business web site they are much cheaper.

Walking around in tall grass this time of year, I wear my heavy Kenetrek boots and turtleskin gaiters. Before I got gaiters, I was constantly checking where I was stepping. Too distracting; I want to keep my eyes up, and the gaiters let me do that with confidence. Of course, I still listen...

The other alternatives is snake boots.....About the only ones that I liked were the BPS zippered boots.

i hate rattle snakes too, this one ran into a 45 acp at 6ft that was as close as i was going to get, now what to do with the skin

yes I bought some while back but the ones I bought are to awkward & heavy. purchased from cabelas. but they are heavy duty.
Just be advised every one, "since I live in the high desert", from all the rain San Diego county got in spring there was big spurt of grass growth with wild grain. which equates to millions of desert rats. which equates to thousands of rattle snakes this year. so far killed around my property 7-8 rattles, and as summer progresses there will be more. be vigilant & safe out there. the worst ones were the small ones because no rattles. my old partner all most sat on one, he set his back pack on top of it. so just because one is wearing boot and leg protection , you can accidentally sit or put your hand to close. they are well camouflaged, and very hard to see. I hate hiking in the summer. never was very exited scouting in the heat.
