Hey Guys. I havent posted in a while but a buddy and I ran out to the CNF here in San Diego County. We had great action all morning and my 22-250 ran into this little guy at 120 yards. Good times!

Nice shot. Is that a Ruger American 22-250? If so, I'm wondering what kind of ammo you shoot and what kind of groups do you get?

I have one and have been shooting the Barnes Vor-TX 50 grain factory loads (don't hand-load) but haven't been impressed with the grouping. Getting 2-3" at 100 yards.

Will be heading out for yotes shortly here...

2-3" Groups sounds bad no matter what ammo you are shooting. Are you setting the gun up at an indoor range? I recomend using a sled and dialing it in you should get better groups then that. Are you getting 2-3" groups with other ammo? Also check the barrel twist see what kind of bullets it likes. Maybe you need to go lighter or heavier depending upon the twist. I love hornandy v-max and get great groups with my .223 it looks like they make a 50g 22-250.

I sight the gun in at Angeles shooting range on Little Tujunga Canyon Road. I hold the gun in a lead sled.

I hunt in the Condor Range so I have to use lead free ammo (I guess we'll all be using lead-free shortly). The only readily available off-the-shelf lead free ammo has been the Barnes 50 grain.

The gun has a 10" twist. I'm no ballistics expert, but I've been told that the longer lead-free ammo is difficult to stabilize in these hyper-velocity calibers and that a really fast twist (around 8") is needed for decent accuracy (true? false?).

So with that in mind, my only other option seems to be to go with lighter/shorter bullets. But again, I'm very limited due to the lead free issue. Hornady makes an approved lead free bullet, the 35 Grain Superformance NTX, but no idea when those will be available again. I contacted Hornady and asked about these and was told they were removed from the Temporary Suspended list back in July, but they didn't know when they would actually go into production again.

So that's where I'm stuck.

With a 1 in 10 twist I bet that barrel would like a 65 grain bullet more. I looked for a heavier one but couldn't find anything right away. I can tell you if you go lighter the gun will be less accurate. You want a 1 in 14 twist for those 35 grain bullets. Lead free are notoriously not accurate but if you check out the reloading bench thread lungpoper has the Barnes varmint grenade shooting great but he is hand loading. I would say look for a heavier bullet if possible and it will probably stabilize better. Really you just want to kill a coyote so the grouping you have now will work. But 1" groups put a little bit more confidence in your shots that's for sure. Check out this link it is all about barrel twist and bullets for the 22-250.

Yes, It is the Ruger American 22-250...IMO the best hunting rifle for so cal. Proper placement will drop anything. Dropped a nice buck and hog this year without having to chase them down.

And I shoot the Horandy Vmax, 50 gr. Cant beat that ballistic tip
