Commission invites public comments on hunting proposals at Moses Lake meeting

OLYMPIA - The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission will accept final comments on proposed hunting rules for 2012-14 seasons during a public meeting March 9-10 in Moses Lake. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. both days.

The commission, a nine-member citizen panel appointed by the governor to set policy for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), will discuss those proposals during the meeting at the Moses Lake Civic Center, 401 S. Balsam St. in Moses Lake.

Hunting rules are on the agenda for Friday, March 9. WDFW has proposed more than a dozen changes in state hunting rules, ranging from allowing waterfowl hunters to use electronic decoys to adding a day to western Washington elk seasons.

State wildlife managers will brief the commission on hunting seasons for small game, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, cougar, black bear, deer and elk in conjunction with the proposed rule changes. The commission will accept public comments during hearings that follow each hunting-rule briefing.

The commission is scheduled to consider adoption of those proposals at its April 13-14 meeting in Olympia.

At its March meeting, the commission also will discuss a draft position statement on wolves in Washington, and consider a proposal to increase water flow to a salmon-bearing creek in Okanogan County by improving the irrigation system on a property near Oroville.

An agenda for the March meeting is available on the commission's website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/commission/ .
