1) Talk to the guys at any bow shop. Learn about how much poundage you need for hunting, the draw you need and other technical stuff. Shoot a few models.
2) I suggest you look at used bows. A lot of people spend top dollars in a new bow and sell it or they upgrade.
3) When you find one in your price range and that fits you, and if you think you want to buy it. Ask the seller if he is cool meeting you at the shop to have the bow inspected for safety and to make sure it fits your specs because you don't know much about bows. If he says no..move on.
4)Negotiate the price based on "Upgrades" the bow might need. Did you know a new better sight for the bow can cost $$$$? The release is also very expensive, the rest is incredibly expensive and a new string is also pricey. So take that into account and do the math. If the seller does not want to drop the price, you might be too close to the price of a new entry-level bow, so why bother buying used.

I bought my first bow years ago..it is not perfect but is great. Of course I dried fired it 3 times by mistake..lol..but I saved a bunch of money because it sits in the garage most of the year.
