I didn’t exactly get the early-morning hunter-of-the-year award on this one. By the time I finished the circus act of getting out the door, I finally rolled out on the new Bakcou Mule e-bike a solid 30 minutes after sunrise. Better late than never.
I pushed a few miles deep on the bike, stopping to glass every cut and canyon that looked promising. Around 9:30, the morning got real. A tall, heavy 3x3 D16 buck stepped out at 350 yards—broadside, majestic, and asking for it.
I dropped prone behind my wood-stock Browning .30-06 loaded with 150gr Hammers, settled the crosshairs, and boom… flop. One shot. Game over.
That’s when the reality of my lack of preparation set in. No kill kit in the pack. None. So in a brilliant moment of “I think this will work,” I tried hauling the whole deer out on the Bakcou.
It did not work.
After a few hundred sketchy, comedy-level yards, I buried the buck under a bush, and headed back for the truck like a man who had learned a very obvious lesson the hard way.
Still worth it. Gorgeous country, clean shot, great buck, and a hunt I’ll never forget—mostly because next time, I’m actually packing a knife.
