Ok so i need to turn to you guys for help. My wife is always telling me that we dont just camp any more. :'(

does any one have a nice clean pretty place they like to camp that is maybe off the beaten path? maybe around water? even if its down a dirt or 4x4 road?

I don't want to go all the way up to the sierras for just a weekend. im in North LA but have no problem with a 3-4 hour drive. we would just love to get away from the crowds with out having to hike in a few miles just a nice relaxing truck camping weekend. we camp too much in the dessert

thanks in advance.

Thanks buddy it's only 3 hrs or so for me. Looks pretty nice. Bishop was suggested but it's another hr or more. This may be it. Do you just stay at Kennedy camp ground?

Re: sugestions for pretty and relaxing camping spot

Lake Henshaw Campground or cabins.......Basically local, but tons to do and see......Palomar Observatory, Julian, Borrego State Park, the lake, old mines, lots of wildlife are just a few of the things that are minutes away.......2 cents

Re: sugestions for pretty and relaxing camping spot

I left off wineries for the wife and Julian Apple pie for you................. ;D

Re: sugestions for pretty and relaxing camping spot

Yuma is a great place 30 north right on the Colorado river. About a 3 and half hours drive.

Re: sugestions for pretty and relaxing camping spot

Picacho State Park on the river at Taylor lake. 16 miles of washboard dirt road between you and civilization. Probably more than 4 hrs drive and make sure there is no rain in the forecast since the road gets washed out and you might be there till it gets a blade run over it.

Re: sugestions for pretty and relaxing camping spot

Thanks guys for the ideas. got the day off tomorrow, truck is packed. decided to hit kennedy meadows then on to monache meadows wildlife area. should be a nice trip decided to leave the trailer at home due to 4x4 only roads and some light water crossings. haven't tent camped from a car for a while. should be a nice time getting miles from the pavement. got all my calling gear. yote hunting report to fallow. also fishing. haven't fished since i sold my boat last fall. we will see!!!!

Beautiful place, great choice..........Couple of 1960 camping pix from South Fork of the Kern/ Kennedy Meadows..... (Hope it still has water)..... ;).

Kennedy and Monache meadows are awsome. The drive up the mountain is or was a little challenging. First time I was there we went up in the dark. I was amazed when we came down in the day light

Manache meadows was beautiful. Called in a few yotes to withen 200yards but they would not commit. Fishing sucked only 6" or less golden trout so after 2 days we headed to bishop fished north lake and hit a hotel aww running water and real food. More to come with Picts and fishing reprt when I get home. Off to dinner with a happy wife and dog.

Ok so sorry its taken so long to post the a few picts. I went to work at 2 jobs all week to make up taking Monday and Friday off.

we headed out Friday morning about 9. took it easy stopped at walyworld for our fishing licenses. we sold our boat in the fall and haven't fished since. fueled up at pearsonville and headed up the hill from hell. if you haven't been up the road from the 395 to the mountains above its almost 20 miles of 1.5 lane 2nd gear at 30MPH it sucks. we talked with the nice lady at black rock station, got our fire permit and headed up. 8 miles from the station starts a long tight 4x4 only road in. im a long time 4x4 and jeep driver and this road was as fun as it gets. my new to me f250 super duty crew cab was fine on it (just pull in your mirrors) and we saw lots of full sized trucks on the trail. luckily we did not meet on the small spots on the trail. camp was right on the edge of the menache meadow. its a huge long meadow with a fork of the kern river running through it. we saw 1000's of golden trout all 6" or less. called a few yotes especially at dinner time but non would commit. they all stayed out 4-500 yards and we only brought our 223's. if I had my 243 ar10 it would have been good night. saw no deer no bear no other game save 2 lone ducks. after 2 days of relaxing we got bored of no fishing so we took off to bishop on sunday early.

Sunday afternoon we fished north lake and took in the amazing views of the snow packed peaks. did not want to set up camp or sleep in the truck we we headed in to town at finally got to a room about 9 Monday we headed to a spot a local told us about off the 395 north of town again no luck no bite no nothing so off to south lake. the biggest lake in the area. the problem...? it was DRY. no boat rentals no shore fishing no water. just a huge Da. after that huge disappointment we fished along the river and landed at inlet2 a small pond/lake north of south lake. fished the rest of the day from the dock with no luck. we did not feel bad since no one else landed anything. My wife and I had a great long needed trip. I do need to thank my beautiful amazing wife who help more on this trip then any other we have ever gone on. it was a big surprise and im very grateful for some needed relaxation.

I wanted to thank every one for the suggestions and especially to Aeon for turning us on the this amazing place. ive been wanted to head up that way for a long time.
