Went out Sunday for a little yote action with my hunting partner and his brother from out of state. Arrived to our spot 30 minutes before sunrise. On our approach, we heard a very big pack of dogs howling and yipping. That gets your adrenaline going but bothered me some (wish we were already in the spot at this time). We set up and our first stand was about an hour. No call backs, 2 visuals at ~700 yards, and then nothing. Moved around to a new location but didn't like the feel of the setup. Turned around and went back to our original stand which is the primo sniping location for the entire area. The ecaller was running multiple distress, pup distress, female distress, challenge calls, NOTHING. Batteries died in the FoxPro so I pulled out my cheapo Primos cottontail distress. Gave some serious inflection through 3 30 second call sequences. Right when I finished the third call, my buddy whispers "THERE". Looked up to see this dog on a rope coming in from ~700 yards! He was BOOKING in for me! Had 2 decoys and a predator decoy and they didn't even phase him. He knew where I was from my calling and was coming for me. Dog came in to about 30 yards and just stopped. There was a big rock in front of me and I had my Remi 870 and my Ruger American 308 to my side. I grabbed the shottie and he spotted my shoulder move and he was OUT! I thought I was concealed behind the rock... rookie move. Fired off 3 slugs at him at about 80 yards, all misses. Dropped the Remi and grabbed the Ruger. This dog was in full sprint. First shot, just high, second and third shot, right behind. Last round in the clip, just in front of him. The dog was an adolescent and I know I'll most likely never get this dog to come in again. Sometimes we let the rush get the better of us. I know better than to move so quickly. Should've had a dog in the bag. Still a great day and not too often when you get to shoot at a dog in full sprint at 400-500 yards (damn I was close!).
