Robert Yak and I drove to Sacramento Friday to hunt Little Dry Creek Wildlife Area.....Beautiful spot with miles of rice and woodlands.....We also went over to Gray Lodge W.A.....Unbelievable amounts of waterfowl and wildlife in general.....Saw ducks, geese, swans, sandhill cranes, deer, turkeys, quail, and doves.....What was totally absent were pheasant (pretty sad).....We had the #2 pick and blinds 1 & 2 had not been hunted all year. Our anticipation for the next morning was high.....Unfortunately, the area we had in the morning was void of ducks or geese.....Early on, we passed on spoonies & hen pinnies (no teal even seen), but it got very apparent that there just weren't many ducks using this area.....We ended up with 10 birds, but had a great time on a wildlife area I had never been to before.....I'd do it again tomorrow.....lol
After the marathon drive home last night (we left LDC at 12:00 pm), Jacob convinced me we should hunt deer this morning, since it was the last day for rifle. So at 3:30 am, I was up and at 'em to get going.....1/2 hour before sunrise was at about 5:50 this morning. As we drove into the property in the dark, we immediately saw deer (good sign).....We parked and started glassing down the hill and to the north.....The telltale sign of a white butt was seen quickly.....Being still pretty dark, I just couldn't make out what it was, but I could see antlers.....The lighter it got, the better the view.....At about 6:05, I told Jacob he was a nice forky (we've had nothing but small forkies in front of us for awhile).....The buck was actively feeding away from us (100+ yds) and didn't offer a broadside shot for awhile. When he did, Jacob dropped him with one "Copper Pill".....Beautiful buck and for the 2nd year in a row, Jacob filled his tag on the last day.
Great week-end of hunting!
