I was invited out with a hunthing mentor of mine to southern Oregon because a family member of his had both a bear and blacktail tag to fill. Jumping at the opportunity, we left early Friday morning from his folks' house in LA, arriving in Oregon at around 3pm. Within an hour, we were camo'd up and heading into the mountains.
Fast forward 2 more days of hard hunting, over 20 miles of hiking, and thousands of feet of elevation change, and lots of sweat and burrs in our boots, we had sore feet, but happy souls. We couldn't get a bear to come in (not for lack of trying), but we were blessed with an opportunity at a beautiful 4 by 3, which our Oregonian friend took, and the bullet found its mark. Meat!
I was able to field dress and butcher my first big game animal, which we finished vacuum sealing around 11pm on Sunday. Left Oregon at 4am Monday and got home to San Diego in time to watch some Monday night football with my wife and her wonderful cooking. Looks like we'll be eating deer meat in the near future!
I learned so much through both sheer effort, and my experienced friends who were kind enough to take the time to show me how to go from timber to table. I attached a few photos from the hunt, and my first BACKSTRAP! Thanks to the entire SCH community for their invaluable knowledge, much of which served me well on this hunt. I look forward to taking my newly acquired experience and applying it to future hunts, many of which I'm sure will be with you folks. Cheers!
Note: I'm the guy with the beard on the left in the photo with the 4 of us and the deer.
