Does anybody own or has used the Ruger SR-762? I'm open to competitive suggestions too.

I know that a hunting rifle can be had for a lot less money but we have had an AR scheduled for our next gun purchase and I just recently decided to pursue this sport. We have a lower receiver for 5.56 that we had planned to build on. I think I priced it out a year or so ago to be around 2000 or so to get the rest of it the way I wanted.

In a hunting rifle I really want something relatively lightweight, .308 and semi-automatic. Having not been hunting yet I may change these desires at a later date and can purchase a rifle that really fits them, but then the AR would still be a good addition to my cabinet.

The other path would be to build my 5.56 AR and go for a used bolt-action .308 at around $500.

I'm not a big fan of AR style rifles for hunting (predators & pigs possibly excepted).....And personally, don't understand the hype of these guns.....Not knocking your choices, just me.

For 2 grand you could have a couple of quality hunting rifles with pretty good glass......2 cents.

I hunt with ARs almost exclusively. My 233 is almost as light as my 243 bolt gun was. I love the low recoil fallow up shots. My ar10 in 243 is a big heavy gun but again near zero recoil and great fallow up shots. None of my several ARs cost anywhere near 2000. I'm well under 1000 with glass. My ar15s are super light.

If I was looking into bigger guns 308+ I'd go bolt. I saw a great deal on a Remington 770 in 300wim mag at bass pro yesterday for 299 with Nikon glass. I'll be getting my son a 30-06 savage with glass for 350. It will be a good affordable bigger game gun for him to start with.

If you heart is absolutely set on using an AR platform build a 6.8 SPC it is an effective cartridge and will be good for medium sized game and varmint. My 2 cents but a Ruger American in 30-06 or 270 and get out there and hunt. I own a few AR and they sit in my safe I don't like carrying them in the field. I feel much more comfortable with a standard rifle slung over my shoulder.

I agree on what is most comfortable for you personally. I personally love my ARs but I'm VERY comfortable with them. I've trained and used them extensively. A bolt is also much more reliable unless you happen to know how to work on ARs. Not that it's hard just annoying The 6.8 is a great all around so cal round.

Thanks for all of the input!

I really feel like I am going to want a semi-auto. Also, I'm kind of obligated to finish an AR build and get the wife a new pistol (she wants a compact Springfield XD9) before I can get after a hunting rifle. A .45 1911 is also on my short list for myself...

Maybe the best way ahead is to dial back and go forward with the 5.56 build so it isn't so expensive. It's probably the only AR I will build for a good amount of time. GSPman do you have more details on your builds? I know so little I don't know what is proper, I simply planned based on what looked/sounded good given my limited experience.

If I could build the AR for less, that would free up funds to hit the rest of my list.

Side Note: Sorry I realized that this is in the wrong forum. Can a moderator move it to "Guns, Bows, Clothing and Gear"? Thanks!

I have an Armalite AR10 w/ACOG. it is heavy compared to my Rem700 SPS 762 w/Leupold MK4. AR good for static or ambush hunts but stalking/humping take my Remmy anyday.
