Started early with Jacob (my daughter's boyfriend) in my best 40 acres......Got set-up, east wind, and it was pretty cold (39)......Perfect I'm thinking for this spot. Daybreak comes and goes, but with the exception of a load of turkeys, only one small doe walks by. We then start walking the property and it produces one doe with a yearling......Not a real good start......We wait it out till 9:00 am and we decide we're going to MCC and see what's available.......Typical last week-end (packed) and there's nothing I was interested in......At this, we decide to have brunch......After talking with fellow hunters and eating, we decide to go back up the mountain. Stop by some turkey spots and other props, but nothing other than turkeys......We finally get back to our original spot......As we roll, in we see about 6 does. Then Jacob says, there's the buck. We scramble, but they make us and off they go.....We now just settle in for the long haul. It's only 1:00 pm. Of course, I'm dozing off and everytime I do. Jacob says here comes a deer.....Doe, doe, doe and more does, but no bucks.....Finally at about 3:00 pm, I spot the buck we saw earlier chasing a doe about 300 yds away. He did seem to be pushing her and others our way. So, we stayed put. Plus, not only did we have the does eyeballs watching. But about 50 turkeys are now between him and us......This goes on for about a half hour. Finally the turkey see us, but no alarm putts (that's a good thing with these deer).....The buck is still behind brush and trees, but if he goes another 10 yds there was an opening at about 148 yds.......Sure enough the doe walks thru and he follows and stops in that exact spot. At this Jacob says, " I can make this shot"....I say, if you've got an opening go for it.......Boom!...... And he does a bad flip. A couple of kicks and that was all she wrote.......Lots of high 5's for Jacobs 2nd buck.......Really nice 3x2.......We gut him and drag him to the truck. And we're done. It's now 4:22 pm......I say wouldn't be something if another buck came in.......Well, about that time I see a bunch of does coming down the mountain......And wouldn't you know it, a beautiful big forky is with them......He gets within 50 yds of me, but I just couldn't whack him (having a big buck & 1/2 and elk in the freezer). Did shoot him with the camera though......Plus, I want that big forky gene in the pool......
Great day of hunting and congrats to Jacob. Watching someone else shoot really is more fun......
