I've had a Mosin sitting in my safe for the last few years that I've wanted to work on but never had time until now, being quarantined and all. It was in decent condition but needed another cosmoline clean and stock refurbishing. I disassembled it completely and soaked everything in mineral spirits, then rinsed with boiling water and oiled all the metal. The stock got stripped, sanded, then got stain and poly. Even though I'll probably leave it stock, I'm thinking about adding a scope and taking it out for deer season. Anyone have any recommendations? Been looking at a cheap Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x scout scope with a Brass Stacker mount, although that setup will still be more than I paid for the rifle...

Nice. I did one of mine a couple years ago and you reminded me that I have another still to do. I just put boiled linseed oil on mine for a finish. The I'll probably try tung oil.
I also made the bolt work smoother not get stuck and made the trigger lighter. I paid $300 for both mine and 2 spam cans of 7.62x54. Wish those deals could still be had. Oh he gave me a case and and ammo can too.

I may pick your brain over PM about the bolt smoothing and trigger work. Those crazy deals seem to be a thing of the past. Mosins nowadays are going for $300-400 on CG.. I got mine for $180 several years ago and, like Drew said, I remember them at Big 5 for $75 like 8-10 years ago.

My father in law gave me a Mosin before he passed. He picked it up when he was in the Korean war. I checked the barrel using lead fishing weights and my came out to a .310 bore. Found out that Enfield .303 rounds can be used for reloading. If you use this method to check your barrel you will find out they can range from .309 all the way to .313. Mine will hold 2.5 grouping at 300 yds.
