Hey guys! New to the site (and California) came a long way from Connecticut and i was wondering if anyone here does any shed hunting out here just east of San Diego?? Its that time of year back home and im starting to go a little stir crazy out here. I was an avid whitetail bowhunter back home and in my mind there is nothing better this time of year than getting lost in the woods for hours just me and the dog, exploring new potential hunting spots, scouting for bucks and of course finding sheds! The landscape out here is so much more wide open than CT and im kindof wondering if id even be able to take up such an activity out here. Any thoughts? Do any of you like to go shedding?

Welcome Jared. Shed hunting is great fun in the off-season, and a great way to scout for where the deer are. What kind of dog do you have? What do you hunt besides deer during the season? Bow or firearm, or both?

Honestly hunting whitetail was something i got into 7 years ago and although hunting waterfowl/turkey is very popular where i used to live i never got into it. Just bowhunting deer. Love the chase, and the fact that i was able to do so with a bow was not only fun but also very rewarding to me. As for the dog, hes a mix but mostly german shepherd. Not a hunting dog but a great companion who loves to explore the great outdoors with me.

If your dog is still trainable and you want to take him shed hunting, you might consider having him trained to avoid rattlers before you take him out in the field this spring. That's assuming you haven't done it already. There are rattlers as far north as PA, but I don't know how common they Are in CT. There are several sessions coming up when the local chapter of NAVHDA is sponsoring classes near SD, but if you're not local you might check a neighboring chapter. I'm trying to set something up for my pup as well. He was too young last spring to do it. You can PM me if you want to follow up offline, and I can help you track down some opportunities.
