So I birddogged for my old man today on base (because I haven’t bought my base hunting permit yet lol) and I was able to put him on birds the entire morning! New honey hole! All this time learning from previous hunts, YouTube, biologists, hunting articles, and blogs has paid off! This was our first quail hunt in two years and I was absolutely stoked, even if I wasn’t shooting.

Unfortunately, we lost two birds in medium heavy cover. I’m pretty bummed that we were not able to find them after about an hour of scouring. I was crawling through bushes and recklessly overturning every shrub nearby where they landed to find them, but alas no cigar! :( I figured they ran off but the shrubbery was just high enough to obscure us from seeing them on the ground. These little boogers just don’t die when they hit the ground!

We could’ve downed some more but didn’t want to risk losing anymore. So we checked out and rushed back to OC for church. Lesson learned that I’m not as great a retriever as I previously thought I was and to shoot only one at a time and get to it ASAP. All in all, it’s been a pretty GREAT day just even getting to see quail while I’m actually out quail hunting, not when I’m deer hunting or duck hunting

My guy! Next to bagging quail, catching lobsters is my next biggest unfulfilled childhood dream lol. We have hoop nets but just have a hard time finding inexpensive kayak rentals for overnight (can’t afford the guided trips). I should just get a wetsuit and start freediving already.
Good luck tomorrow man!

@msailor I agree! It was an absolutely BEAUTIFUL day to be hunting today! Keep grinding bro and the deer gods will bless your efforts! Archery is no joke.

I've been hinting over GSP's for many years now and vary seldom lose any birds. Plus, there is nothing better than hunting over a good dog.

Can you train them to retrieve ducks in the water as well? Been eyeing those dogs for awhile.
