Anyone know a good zone/ zones they would recommend for a first time cow elk hunt to put in for? I currently have 1 point and done expect much but would like to put down a zone instead of just grabbing another point this yeat. Want to start with a hunt that will allow my to have opportunities at a good meat animal with my bow.

Just make sure that whatever you put in for actually has public access. There are lots of units with virtually no public access and you have to outfit or pay trespass fees. That’s a lot to ask for now tag IMO

Just be aware that drawing any elk tag in California is likely going to take many years. If you want to get going hunting elk I would recommend another state. There are plenty of places you can just go buy a cow tag or draw one every year or every-other-year. There is always a chance to draw in the random but it’s a pretty weak chance.
