Ok, just when I thought I had this figured out, another question I cannot seem to find the answer to...

If I apply for a PD (preference point) with my first choice, and a restricted hunt with my second choice, can I then purchase a unrestricted tag as well? Or does my preference point count towards my 2 tag limit? I was thinking I could get a preference point, as well as a restricted and unrestricted but I am starting to think I am wrong....

any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Owen, you have lots of company. Points don't count against your limit of tags per year, so you can still have a max of two tags per year even if you gain a pref point. When you submit for the draw, you can list (as your first choice) an outstanding GMU with a very low chance of success, so you'll get your point plus the tags you want. On the off chance you get drawn for the outstanding unit you rank first, you'll forfeit the points but win a great hunt. And there are always folks here who will help you make the most of it with advice or help with scouting. Hope that helps you.

To answer your question on the restricted tag.
Yes. The way you worded it.
You can have a restricted and unrestricted tag before Aug,or you can have two unrestricted tags. You can not have 2 premium tags and or a premium and restricted tags before Aug. After Aug you can have any combination of premium, restricted tag. ( leftovers )

If you apply for a preference point as your first choice, your second and third choice will never be considered. Your draw was successful and you drew the point. You are eligible to purchase a second tag after the draw though, but it will be an over the counter type tag. I believe if some restricted tags don't sell out in the draw, then you will be eligible to purchase as your second tag. Your point still remains as your first tag.

The answer to your question is yes (Or does my preference point count towards my 2 tag limit?).

There is strategy to getting the point and getting two tags though.

Ok got it. So first choice should be goodale buck hunt which I won't get, then get me restricted and unrestricted tags

I hope either a22 or d16 ends up as leftover so I can get both

Thanks for clarification

Dang. This is why I always check with NBK before I submit my final list. Question: If I understand correctly, D16 should be unrestricted this year because it didn't sell out before August 2, correct?

Don,

I think it will be restricted because it sold out the same day they went OTC. I believe if it sells out AFTER the 2nd it would be unrestricted.

Same here (for this year.)

I want to get both A-22 & D16, but not sure if I can get both as well as a preference point since their both restricted... unless they don't sell out

You can get them both - back to strategy.

Owen,

You must make a choice.....Apply or buy either the A-22 or D-16 first.....The one constant has been that there's more D-16's available on August 2nd.....Either way, there's a chance you may not get both.

Correct, so I have a decision to make. If I buy the A-22 first, I have a much better chance of getting both, but there is a good chance I will end up with only an A-22. By the D16 first, I get my rifle, but may not get the archery...

I guess you cant always have your cake and eat it too! perhaps I will get lucky and get both

Don't forget, if you get the D-16 1st, you can buy a AO tag.....Good early in the D-16 archery season and thru the D-16 rifle season.....Buck only.

The point game is really fun. I am applying in a bunch of states now, the strategies vary for each. My plan for CA this year will be X9a 1st and A22 2nd D16 3rd. I will most likely draw the A22 then I will buy my D16 over the counter. I want the A22 so I have the option of hunting Deer until December. Big game hunting has ruined my life!
