Where to start....... so Friday night i got the call to join my my dad and our buddy at BIG HORN CANYON RANCH, our buddy wanted to put his wife's brother on a pig for his first hunt and asked us to help make it happen (i had never been there before), so i told the wife, " women I'm going hunting in the morning ".
430 am came and i was up packed and ready to go, they picked me up at 5am and we left. got to the ranch and spotted pigs right away from the office and knew wright away this pig hunt was not gonna be hard....
got the kid set up on a ridge and we made it as real of a hunt as possible, the pigs were moving and beeped the little bore and bam 215 yrd that's all she wrote.....
got it taken care of and thrown in the meat locker, kid was stoked and had a great time. ( sorry now pic of the pig pics were taken on the his phone not mine)
so we were getting ready to leave and my dad said he wanted to chase a ram ( TEXAS DOLL). we got to hiking and hit the ridge line and spotted a few rams on the hill side over, we went after them with his bow, got to 30 yrd and he drew back...... wifffff! he has made a 30 yrd shot a million times and he missed this ram hahahahahahah i laughed my a## off. he was pissed blamed it on me and went after it again.
long story short the ram put the slip on him at the bottom of the hill side and came back towards the rest of us and got with in 15 yards of us caught are wind and bounced like a mule deer down the ridge.
my dad met back up with us and said "where did he go"? we pointed and went that way..... looked over the ridge and saw about 14 sheep so he thought he found him and grabbed my gun. He posted up and sent one flying, MISSED ! then it was my guns fault blah blah blah!.....
so the kid is a first time hunter never looked threw binos, shot a gun any thing related to hunting besides Call of dudty...... he say's " guys look is'nt that the ram over there? we all turn and look, DAM GOAT put the slip on all of us!... so i told my dad "GET IT"!!!!
Larry ranged it 400 yards my dad said "yea wright, not with this gun"... so i grabbed my RUGER AMERICAN 30-06 with a REDFEILD REVENGE 6x18x40 on top, lay ed down had Larry on the spotter and my dad on the bino's.
wind was gusting,he was walking up hill and i beeped him he stopped Larry ranged him again 417 yrds , perfect shot broad side. i squeezed one off, hit right in front of it at chest level. the ram jumped straight up and moved a few feet and looked back and stood broad side again. i adjusted and squeezed another and sent one right threw the vitals. hit it hard he didn't know what hit him he started to move at a slow walk i squeezed another one off, hit again and it went down the hill and tumbled.
i have made a shots out to 700 yards at the range, but that shots at 417 yards were pretty rad. it wasn't a metal plate i can tell you that much.
for you archery hunters, i wish i would have brought my bow. Just because the pigs may run towards you when you whistle the rams are a bit more cunning, they run the terrain out there and would have been a kick in the pant s to chase them around that place with a bow. my dad sure had fun.
