First post here. I'm looking to spend a lot of time hunting Hogs in central and northern California and I'm hoping to get some suggestions on some hunting clothes. I'm pretty familiar with what works for me with real hot weather (+100) but when temps. start to drop in the hills I'm not sure what is the best way to go. I do like the higher end gear like Kuiu. I have some cheaper synthetic and merino wool shirts that were ok but are all worn out now. So I thought of going with some new base layers, a softshell jacket, and a puffy jacket if it really gets cold. I do have a Kuiu Chagach jacket that I like. So for California I'm sure if its better to go with a synthetic or the merinos for the base layers. I see kuiu has the pelotons but I don't know if those are better suited for extreme weather locations.

Any feedback would be great. There's time I'll be spending days out in the hills so I want to make sure I have what I need. When the wind or fog moves in I don't like freezing. That's my main concern. It can be so hot during the day moving around and all but it surprises me how cold it can feel out there at times even though the temps are still above freezing. I've tried a Jetstream in the pass and it felt good but I only wore it for a short will. I had a merino long sleeve t under it and it was about 50 degrees and I could feel a light chill coming thru while walking on flat ground. Not really working hard. I thought it would have done a little better. There was moisture in the air so maybe that had an effect. Any advise would be appreciated.

Kuiu is awesome gear. I have like 20 different pieces of gear from them. I have Teton pants shirts and rain gear, peloton 1/4 zip hoodie, Tiburon pants, guide jacket, ultra shirts and attack pants. All great pieces of gear. Check out the Teton line, great stuff at a reasonable price.

Thanks taft. Hows that peloton shirt working for you. Wondering about going with the peloton over the merino. Thought maybe it might hold up better with the brush.

I like it better then the peloton better. But honestly the peloton and Teton are so close...

Is the peloton warmer or heavier?

The Teton is actually like .5 oz heavier. I really can't tell that a big of a difference when wearing them... I went on multiple back pack trips this year from 1 night to 4 nights, my kuiu gear performed extremely well. On my trip in Nevada we had back packed into an area 5 miles in with 95° heat in the evenings and about 40° One morning. I used my Tiburon pants, Teton shirt, merino long sleeve, brought my guide jacket but never used it. I was extremely happy with my gear and glad to know I can trust it.. Any kuiu gear you choose you will be happy with it. I have also heard good things about first lite and Sitka, but i haven't had an issue with kuiu so I'm not gonna change.. Check out their packs too they're pretty awesome!

I love Sitka clothing. It's very rugged, dependable and durable, but pricey. I only buy it when I can find discounts.

Hell Don......If it's pricey for you, it's out of reach for us po' folks...... :(

ps.....Here we go again.....How'd we ever kill anything with cotton hoodie, Pendelton shirts, nylon jackets, Levi's, & Redwing boots..... ???

I know, I know, Tube TV, flip phone, etc..... :D

Steve it's pretty obvious that the deer have better skills these days than they had back then. Just think how good it could have been if Kuiu would have been around in those days. :D

It is a comfort thing not a camo thing Steve. You can drive across country in Yugo and get from point A to int B. That is a fact. But a 2016 ZO6 Corvette or a brand new full size diesel would be much more fun and comfortable.

I wore cotton too. But after wearing the Kuiu gear - well, never again. Just like the old fashion SBE's. They get the job done but they beat the piss out of you in the process! :)

Hey!........No piling on........ :D

Haha. All I'm saying is that I care less about the pattern than the material. If I could find more stuff on the rack at REI that wasn't lime green or fuscia, or with reflective tape in it, I'd buy more clothing there. As it is, I get most of my base and mid layers there but they don't have much outer layer clothing that is earth tones.

TJ,

That's awesome.....When you're considering a small home loan to buy this stuff....... :-*

Hahaha unfortunately your right and that is why I don't have any..........yet

it is true that you can spend thousands of dollars on high end clothing and the animals do not care. It is also true that we have been killing animals in Flannels and Levis for ever. One thing to consider, with all the latest and greatest clothing available in todays market, it will not make you a better hunter, but you sure will be comfortable!! To me, that is important. If you ever are able to get decked out in Sitka gear, the qualilty of clothing is unbelievable! Being on the mountain in a comfy and efficient set of clothing, really makes your hunt easier. I have switched to all Merino, allowing me to not overheat on a long ascend up a 500ft ridge. Still keeping me warm enough to not have to break out a huge thick jacket by the different layers I have on . My current set up is Mainly First Lite gear although I have invested in the less expensive Core4Element merino lately which I will be trying out this season. I say invested because it is an investment. It is well worth it in my opinion, only because of the layering capabilities and breathability. My set up for California Hunts up til Nov is almost always the same gear:
FL Desert Boxes - Worth every penny!!
Kanabs
Llano hoodie
Merino SS/LS tee
Puffy Vest
Merino Beanie
Merino Socks
C4E Down Jacket
Anything I peel off during the hunt can all fit in a fanny pack and all very lightweight
