Ugh.. I made a Fatal mistake just now... when I went to pickup the 20 gauge PPT after the 10 day DROS... while I was in the shop... I saw they had a Marlin 1894 SGBL in .44 Magnum. I've always been enamored with the Stainless on Grey Laminate motif... and I'm sitting there just waiting while they are doing all the rigamarole for the DROS paperwork... so I'm asking him to see this handgun.. and that handgun (various CCW options)... so then to myself I'm like "Aw hell, you're here, it's here, have him bring it over!"

Mistake! He brings it over... right off the bat I'm like hey wait a minute! It's substantially lighter than my 336 BL! And it has the Skinner peep sights on it. And even my blind a$$ can do a halfway decent job of aiming those!

My next purchase was going to be a hunting revolver. But... I now dunno... I have a strong hunch it's now going to be a 1894 in .44 Mag !

We've all been there... yes?

When I find myself in that situation, I always tell myself, need has nothing to do with it. Charge!

The big thing is that right off the bat it sure seemed it was a significant bit lighter. My .30-30 336 BL seemed a lot heavier (and yeah, I realize I have an 8oz optic and an ammo cuff on mine and that will affect it a bit, but I'm still pretty sure it's lighter). And after having looked thru that Skinner Peep sight, I'm now really curious to try shooting one that way to see if my Vision as it stands now with the glasses can manage shots to like 50yds with it. Because realistically, for my use of it that's all I'd need.

Hrmm... Is Stainless Steel lighter than regular Carbon Steel?

Yeah.. Ok... just checked Marlin's sight... 1894 SBL is a full 1 Lbs lighter than my 336 BL!

Density of carbon steel and stainless
Is very close. So the same weight.
It would be more of the construction.
Wall thickness and design.

Yeah, what LBH said. But I think the big difference could be all the 'extra' steel they take out of a .30 to make it a .44.
The bad news is that now you will be stuck looking for a CCW in .44:)
I already have the Dirty Harry gun and I'v been looking very close at your Marlin to 'complete ' it.
BTW, my Henry came with a Skinner peep, I love it. Use the small hole for target and the big hole for hunting, it gets on target way faster.
Let me know how you like the Marlin, I may make the jump.
