You should do both...... Sometimes they don't see/smell or hear them.

My dog was running down a trail when it hit her back paw as she ran by chasing a rabbit.

Another key don't shoot the snake until the dog is controlled too many dogs will go after your shot and get hit in the face.

Yea I wonder if the rattlers even hibernated with the warm winter this year. Gonna watch my tail though, last turkey season almost sat down on a baby rattler in the grass.
