CALIFORNIA DRAW RESULTS!!!

If you're in the random pool... odds are you'll never draw a bull tag in your lifetime, even if you are 35. There's always a chance, that's all you can hope for.

180, that's the right tactic. Get him a cow tag and then a chance for a random bull tag. He'll always have the same odds for the bull tag. Ed F

Let me run this past you to make sure I am thinking about this correct.

My dad is 72 and has 18 or 19 elk points. At that point level he is basically relegated to a random tag for bulls and will get too old before he is at max points, unlike us. He may as well draw a cow tag next year (La Panza possibly) and then just keep trying to draw a random bull tag the following year. That way he gets an elk hunt and the only "loss" is 1 year of not having a shot at a random tag, which is like 1 in 1000 anyways.
Yes that is correct, so for example I was two points behind max, so back in 2012 I applied for a cow tule elk tag in the Owens valley, drew it killed my cow and now I’m back in with over ten points and shooting for a bull, I would still be a random draw hunter regardless if I decide to take that tag or not. The difference is I was young enough with enough points that I would have been in the max point pool probably at some point in my life and most likely won’t be now but I will have not lost any additional opportunities until I see where the max point holder drop off of two points from the current max point now, who knows how long that could be and I could very well draw a bull in that time as well as my cow and then at that point have both.

Looks like I will be checking out a new area this season.

1 D14 = N
2 D19 = Y

Going to put in for the 16 as my second tag in July.

Anybody got tips for the 19 zone? Is the terrain similar to the 16? Are the access roads mainly 4x4?

Good luck out there this season!

It can be done…. In all honesty I think D19 is one of the toughest SoCal zones. I haven’t hunted them all though. Very low density of deer, tons of people. The two game refuges concentrate people in a few different spots. Access roads are limited. You can get away from the crowds if you’re willing to hike but there aren’t many water sources. Hunt weekdays if you can.

Thats an awesome looking buck! Do you still hunt it? Until I injured myself I was thinking about pulling a tag and hunting it since it opens sooner than d16. Looks like its very much the same type of hunt.

Thanks for the info Kellen. I have heard it's a tough zone. I plan to get some miles covered once the season opens. I'm E-scouting now to find general areas I want to target. Plan is to checkout some spots and put up some cams.

Very nice buck! I hope I can be as successful this season. Congrats on your accomplishment brother!

Decided to buy and build a new 6.5prc for the sheep hunt. My ol .270 will be a backup.
Oh you decided to after all, when I spoke with you, you seemed pretty dead set on the .270 and nothing wrong with that I have both a .270 (my first rifle) and I also have a 6.5 prc and I love that thing, got it custom made! What brand are you going with ?

Those two bucks are from ‘18 and ‘19. I haven’t hunted it since. It’s a good option for a second tag if you’re curious since there are almost always leftovers. I live in San Diego and I think D19 is harder than D16. It’s nice because you can get up to higher elevation and cooler temps than you can in D16 and it opens earlier so you can stretch your season out a little bit.

Funny, I started with a .270 and recently moved to a 6.5prc. It shoots unbelievably well, probably 1/2" or so 124 hammers @ 3400. X-bolt with a lighter trigger spring.
