When I lived on the Big Island [miss it now, looking at all these posts on efforts to take our guns and give us golf clubs and bowling balls and ballet slippers in exchange], a state representative named Josh Green [an emergency room physician] proposed a new reg for gunowners. I personally knew Dr. Green and he was a cool dude in almost every respect. But he saw dozens of gunshot victims and it got to him. He is now the Lt. Gov of Hawaii and will probably become the Gov soon. He proposed that all gun owners need to go thru a psychiatric evaluation every couple of years, the shrinks chosen by the state. If the shrink detected some sociopathic abnormalities, then the gunowner must surrender all firearms immediately. Can you imagine the interview?

"So, tell me, Mr. Gunowner, do you like to hunt?"

"Yes."

"So, you like to kill animals?"

"Well, it's more than that."

"You like to watch animals die, do you?"

"No, let me explain..."

"You're nuts!! Surrender your guns now!!"

There was no appeal, nada. The shrink determines that you are sick and that's the end of the story. Think it won't happen here? Can't make this crap up.

You're right, it didn't fly. This was several years ago but it got a LOT of traction before it went down in flames. Just my opinion, but don't sell the antis short. They are very intelligent, well organized people with some fancy attorneys who can sneak up behind us and put an end to all we hold dear before we know what happened. Stay alert and informed and organized.

No surprise.. you already have to register your mainland firearms at the police station, guns/ammo are ridiculously expensive, they've reduced the number of target shooting areas, and much of the public hunting lands are already archery only.

I think about the gun regs quite a bit. I am yet to understand them all and make sense of it. I have no idea what the answer is to reduce gun violence.

Whenever there is a shooting in the news I read about it trying to understand who is shooting who and why. I do the digging wondering if I should I apply for my CCW.

The CCW IMO can be extremely helpful but it can also be the end of it all. Kind of like be careful what you wish for.

It seems to me many people are just ass#$%es. The ones without guns turn into Karens and hardcore liberals. The ones with guns just try to end their problems and settle their difference by pulling the trigger on others.

I read about the CPA in Vegas, the CA firefighter, the city worker, and a couple of others that did some shooting. They seem pretty freaking normal folks.

IMO the gun violence issue nowadays does not seem to come mostly from "mentally ill" folks, but rather from normal pissed-off people. The kind of person that could live next door to you, a co-worker and such. The kind of person who might be very caught up in the politics of all, got laid off from work, is unhappy at work, or have family problems.

No gun law, reg, test or ban is going to solve this issue. I look at people in a gun store and I wonder; How do we know this guy or gal won't be the next? There is just no way.

And since I don't want to get shot any time soon, I leave people behind who are extremely politically driven, have pretty obvious mood swings, lack tolerance, or treat firearms with a lack of seriusness which pretty much leaves me to socialize with a handful of friends....

I don't discuss my politics or religion with anyone, never will, not even around a campfire, other than this---I am 100% Independent, leaning toward Libertarian. Government, just leave me alone. But here's my take on firearms regulations---they don't accomplish a damn thing. They are great for getting votes from liberal voters but a few years later, after the reg has been in place for awhile, nothing---nada---has changed other than another chip has been taken out of the second amendment. And it's not just gun regulation, it's curfews, don't park there, don't hike here, you must do this, you must not do this. Where in the US Constitution the feds get so much power is beyond me. Read the 10th amendment---only takes 5 seconds---and then try to figure out why the Feds are so powerful and so big. And speaking of curfews, many years ago my wife and I would drive to the beach at sunset and enjoy a glass of wine or two. Soon, gangs of punks from elsewhere would gather and get drunk and tear the place up and cause fights. How did the local gov solve the problem? No alcohol. Then people began camping out overnight on the beach and littering everywhere. Solution? Curfew at sunset or shortly thereafter. If you've been on this earth as long as I have, you have seen your rights and freedoms whittled away, one little chip at at time. I would move to Montana today if my wife would go with me, which she won't. At least in Montana I could live out the rest of my life with a few basic rights intact.

It all goes back to my original point---the way politicians handle problems is not to address the crooks and criminals and the people who flaunt the law and civility---they take the easy road and pass sweeping legislation that takes rights away from law-abiding citizens. The crooks aren't affected by this legislation because they don't give a rat's ass about the law. I don't know the people on this forum so I won't state anything too controversial [did that on Jesse's and they tore me a new one], but regardless of whether you see this as an apple or an orange, firearm ownership in the USA is under incredible pressure. I wouldn't be surprised if you see a proposition here in CA stating that you need a background check and a permit and a psychiatric evaluation to buy a steak knife. And there is a lot of pressure on politicians to ban the AR15 because of its lethality. Anyone familiar with shotguns will relate to this---Imagine a semi-auto 3" 12 gauge, 6 or 7 in the magazine and 1 in the chamber, loaded with number 3 or 4 buckshot. That's 250 projectiles fired in about 4 seconds. At close range makes an AR look like a Daisy Red Ryder. The AR15 today, semi-auto shotguns tomorrow---it will go on and on. Join whatever firearms advocacy groups you like and join now.

Big thumbs down. No, it isn't apples and oranges. People have been killing each other for a very long time, and will continue to do so, with whatever weapon(s) they can get their hands on.
