Hi everyone,

I moved back to California a few years back after a taste of freedom in Texas and Arizona (not really by choice). I live in East County San Diego and got everything but my hunting licenses. I've been shooting for a few years but mainly ARs/M4s and pistols. I'm looking to hunt what I can near me until I can get more comfortable and have more time to venture out. Look forward to learning a lot here and get hunting ASAP.

Welcome, Varmints, and rabbits. Rabbits when in season. AZ. rabbit is open year round

Never had rabbit before, lol. Good to know though. I'm looking at starting with wild pig since that's year round here too. I knew I wasn't ready to try for the deer lottery here.

Welcome to SCH....If you want a head start on east county....Try to attend the NWTF Spring Turkey Tune-up....You'll learn more in one day there, than anywhere else....There's also monthly meetings with NWTF in Poway (4th Tuesday of each month at the Hamburger Factory)...Lots of one on one with like minded folks.....

Public land hogs are few and far between. Minimum for hogs is about $750. and that is a meat hog trophy add $$$$$$$

Hit the tune up. Also you might want to start with rabbit and coyote hunting. Just to get the feel for the areas you plan on hunting. You may already have a rifle you can use for coyote hunting based on what you have been shooting.

Nice! If I can find an opening that weekend I'll definately try to go. I've got a remodel and I'm finishing up school, but the kids love going to the lake.

I've got the essentials . 12, 5.56, .30.

Not asking for you guys to give away any secrets just yet but with Occatillo being sanctioned now, are there any places left to practice outdoors?

If I may, I wouldn't go out with too many expectations. Just get out there and have fun in nature. You'll start to pick up signs from one animal or another, areas where you don't see anything and you will find species of one sort when you are looking for another.

I found my best deer spot turkey hunting and my best turkey spot deer hunting. I've also found quail spots deer hunting. East county is a great launching point to head further east or south and get into animals.

Really? I thought they'd be more plentiful. Wait, that's what people are paying for them to disappear?
Pigs are a real problem for farmer in central Ca., but because most of the good pig hunting is on private property, the farmers, being businessmen are always looking for an opertunity to make a few extra bucks, so they allow certain guides to hunt their property for a fee. They want the pig numbers reduced just not eliminated. The $750 I mention is a rock bottom price. add all the other expenses and you can easily put down upwards of a couple grand for a pig hunt. The good news is, most hunts are successful assuming you can make the money shot. The guide I have used gives you a free return trip if you don't get a fair shot at a pig. If you get a shot and miss, well that's on you. Check out Ft. hunter Liggett in central Ca. you have to put up with the rules they have on the Ft. but they do have pigs there. One of SCH hunters bagged a nice bull Elk there not to long ago.

I'm trying not to because I don't know what to expect or what to look for. Now that all I need to do is get a license for the season, and I'm about to start having a little more free time, I'm just trying to find places and people that I can learn from. I don't have the money (nor do I like the idea) for these expensive hunting trips. Ammo prices, among other things, are expensive enough. I've seen that the mountains north of Julian are supposed to be decent for deer, as is Camp Pendleton. Obviously, I'm going to take what I can get in order to learn and get the hang of things. Much appreciated on anything y'all have to offer.

And see, being new to this, is totally not conducive.
