Haven't had the chance to do much fishing this year. Only been out once to a local pond for trout and got skunked. My buddy took the day off to take a few of us to one of his honey holes and we soaked some baits. I hadn't caught a sturgeon in about a year so I was first up. Shorty after we set up there was a complete take down on one of the rods. I grabbed the rod and the fight was on. The line was just peeling out and I look up to see the sturgeon leap out of the water and headed down the river at a full tilt, it was big! We jumped down in the river but could not get the fish to slow down. I almost got spooled and had to hit the brakes..both thumbs on the reel and it kept running and finally snapped my 150lb braid.
About 20 min later my rod tip starts to flicker so I take a hold..feel for the head shake and set the hook. This one feel weird..definitely didn't feel like the first one. I head down into the river and I'm reeling in with little to no resistance.(realized it was probably swimming towards me) I thought maybe it was a shaker or even a catfish but once it starts getting closer I hit a wall and the fish takes off. Now it feels heavy..the fight is on.
After about 20 min and a few runs it finally taps out and we get our hands on it. It was a lot bigger then I originally thought. Had to get the tape out because it was longer then my 7'6" rod. It measured in at 8' 2.5"! I beat my PB by half an inch.
The bite turned off and we didn't get our hands on any other fish. But we had a great time hanging out and spending time in God's creation. Definitely blessed to be able to fish for these river dinosaurs.
