Finished some work in SD and beelined over to the Imperial Valley. Had enough daylight to sight-in the scope and bag three cottontails. An ECD landed a little too close to my target during sight-in and well, I guess I’m sighted-in.

Crashed out in a motel and was back out on the grounds as the sun came up this morning. Bunnies were bouncing well, and after limiting with the 10-22 I headed a short distance to an ECD spot and broke out the 20 gauge. These birds wanted to die.

Shower then 11:00 am checkout and back on the road with the 110 degree heat in the rear view.

not to spot burn, not looking for specifics. Just want to know where I can hunt Eurasians in IV? Never been down as I live in North County and want to know where I'm even able to look down there? Any rough suggestions would be much appreciated like the DFG spot or is that BLM land? Thanks

You may want to start here..................:innocent:

ps...Just kidding...Basically, you can hunt anywhere that's not posted...They like feed lots, granary's, corn fields, and melon fields...They also like to be within flying distance from the main cities in the IV...;)

What Steve said. And If you’re just getting familiar with the IV, google earth is your friend. Figure out (it’s not hard) what cattle feed lots, grain silos, and seed plants look like on GE. Mark each one and start driving. That’s how I did it. You’ll figure out which ones have birds coming and going. Find a safe and legal place in their flight paths to shoot. Some of my best spots are a quarter or half mile from the source location in tree clusters they like to go back and forth to from the main source.

I only get down there a few times per year now but imo, ECD numbers are on the rise and except for opening weekend in September, not very many people hunt them anymore. Ten years ago it was a craze and landowners were posting everything in good ECD spots due to slob and idiot hunters. You can also knock on doors ask permission to shoot inside some of these places. Depending on whos in charge that day and what kind of mood they’re in, you Might be invited in. It’s a long shot but I’ve done it successfully a couple of times.

I appreciate the replies @WaterDawg and @ilovesprig! I just didn't know how bad it is posted out there like Kern County is these days since I haven't been down to IV yet. I assume just the basic 150 yards from any road and building/structure on anything that's not posted is fine? I'd like to go do some more wing shooting before hopefully heading to Yuma this year. Really looking forward to quail season this year also and want to try some waterfowl but again don't know where to start with that one since I haven't gone since I was a kid. Really appreciate the responses and will let the forum know how I did if I make it out. Just didn't want to go all the way out there with zero clue and no encouragement of looking by the feed lots outta fear of the law. The biggest thing taught to me in the orchards as a kid is don't ruin it for everyone else and pickup the trash from the people who are.

Make the time @willlerd . It is one thing you can't get back. The Valley is still full of opportunity for those who are willing to put in a little effort. And try not to let one trip define your opinion. Hunting is a funny thing. One minute you are bored as hell, the next minute, game is everywhere. Like they say, you can't fill a game bag from your couch (unless you have a couch in your deer stand).

Well I stopped buying hunting licenses for a few years when the steel shot regs came around. I was so angry I thought "I won't give them my money". Started doing a lot of fishing especially when I moved to San Diego after 2 years at gunsmithing school. I was only hurting my self in doing so and came to really miss it. Had a great quail season in october-end of season and realized that by not hunting I was letting them win. Plus I enjoy more so now, minus the lack of friends and family hunting with me like in the old days. I know how fast time flies and it's all what you're willing to spend it on. Trying to learn more about hunting in San Diego county while I'm still fortunate to do so. Appreciate any and all advice/recommendations given and I too try to spread the little bit I have (not spots though).

A good place to meet some like minded folks is the NWTF San Diego Chapter monthly meetings...We all hunt and fish the IV and locally...The next meeting is tonight at the Hamburger Factory (Start time is 6:30 pm)...It will be well worth your time and effort to be there...........

ps...I will warn you...If you get into turkey hunting it can be very addicting.....................:joy:
