I was just notified that I drew Unit 43 in Idaho for Elk (rifle). Super excited! I hunted Unit 33 last year. I had a great time and had some really good opportunities, but couldn't quite get the bulls to cross over from private to public. Had cows at less than 50 yards, but the bulls seemed...
Sorry for the confusion. I actually meant controlled hunt, not draw hunt. I suspect odds of success are low, but non-residents can apply. I think the timeframe for applying for controlled hunts is May, but I haven’t looked into it yet.
I tried to join at 8:30 too and was unable to get into the queue until 8:59:15. So I did make it into the queue with 45 seconds to spare, but was definitely getting nervous that the network issues were going to prevent me from having a chance. I was #10440, but the zone I wanted to hunt sold out...
Great job on punching your tags this year!!! That doe will be good eating. I am not sure what the storm front will do, but hopefully I will be able to get into some deer after it passes through. I am planning to start hunting Friday.
Another morning I had a cow elk at 35 yards. She didn’t even know I was there. But no bulls followed her. Fun, but hard work. Never fired a shot. Saw lots of doe and cows, but of course we only had buck and bull tags.
Idaho elk hunting is hard work. The terrain is straight up, straight down. We were hunting public land, but the private land held most of the herds. We called a herd in on us one morning and had 3 cow elk broadside at about 75 yards. The bull elk was following them, but he stopped in the thick...
Glad to see you bagged a nice deer. I am in Vegas this weekend but plan to start hunting D16 on Friday Nov 4 for about 8 days. I hope I can bring one home this year. Congrats on your nice buck!!!
I am going to miss the D16 opener along with all of the associated excitement this year. Heading to Idaho today to kick off a week of public land DIY elk and deer hunting. First time hunting elk, first time hunting in Idaho. Should be a good learning experience. Plan to hunt the mighty 16 the...
Then it took off back down the creek. My buddy left right afterwards. He figured there wouldn’t be any deer in there with that huge cat hanging around. It might be a thought season this year with cats in the area.
Dang!! A buddy of mine hunted the spot where I shot my deer last year a couple of weeks after me. He said a huge male mountain lion came up from the creek to within about 70 yards of him and was just hanging out for awhile.
Doe and buck tags for D16! That is great. I have two buck tags again this year in D16, but I will be lucky to fill one of them. I may try to contact you when I get there in early Nov to see how your hunt went. Glad to hear that you are seeing some nice bucks. (714)227-3278 ... Darren
