Heads Up! Special Notice for regulations for the Upcoming San Jacinto Wildlife Area Junior Hunt

Tom Trakes wanted me to get the word out to all the Junior Hunters and their adults regarding the regulations that the SJ Staff have to go by for the upcoming Junior Waterfowl Hunt on Saturday, February 5th. Tom wanted to get the word out on this as they simply DO NOT want to have to turn away...

Tags being pulled before season over?

Big 5 is usually a sort of self-serve when it comes to DFW licensing. If you don't know what you need or want they don't either so it's best to study up on the licensing requirements before you go so you can walk the millennial at the front counter through it.

    Coot Weekend at San J!

I may be wrong but aren't coots pretty much regulated by the feds like ducks are? The states set seasons and limits for ducks and geese but they have to do it within the federal framework. Is it the same for coots? Just asking because I don't really know. If they are then to get an extended...

    San Jac disabled blind question

Those tules are something else. What they need is some type of herbicide or something to control them. I remember a couple of years ago they mowed them (or disked them) out from around Marsh D about 2 months before the season and by opening day they had all grown back.

    Type A Land Pass Expiration

What really kind of sucks about those type A passes is if you buy one then don't have an opportunity to use it there's no refund, even a partial refund. I know, a lot of people will say, "don't buy one unless you're going to use it." Well, things change, people get sick, trucks break down...

San Jacinto - best blind to take non hunting female for first time hunt?

Hummmm...we're discussing not losing cripples yet there are some, as it always seems, bashing 3 1/2s. I always say do the math. A 3" 1 1/2 oz #2 load has 187 pellets. A 3 1/2" 1 3/8 oz #2 load has 203 pellets. That's only 16 more pellets, but that's 16 more chances to put an extra pellet in...

    wister questions

Buy your type A pass at Big 5 or Turners or some place local. If you buy it online from the DFW it may not get to you on time.

    San J - Waterfowl

Wister also hunts Sunday but it's usually pretty slow on Sundays after Saturday's shoot.

    Ammo Stashers

One thing, to me anyway, with the 25 shell limit is that I can't carry any "cripple killers". Back in the lead shot days, I used to take out way more ammo than I needed but one thing that did come in handy was the "cripple killer" loads I'd take along. What these were were exact duplicates of...

    Somebody Quawcked ...

Nice when you can do that. Many years ago I had access to a ranch up near Gorman. One Christmas eve I went there to quail hunt. On the way, I stopped at Quail Lake and put an 8-pound striped bass in the ice chest. I then went up to this ranch and decided to check the small 100 foot in...

    Ammo Stashers

Don't know why that's a thing some people feel is necessary to do. I can probably count on one hand the times I've had to walk back to the truck for more ammo and that's since that restriction was enacted. A lot of the time in our neck of the woods you wouldn't have enough shot opportunities...

    San Jacinto afternoon sweat line?

Just show up before 2 pm and sign up on the refill list at the check station. If any blinds are available you can immediately pick one and go out, if not, wait a while and someone will come in and you could take their blind. Like Steve said though, at least right now anyway, you'll probably...

    Band day

Maybe that's a good sign for me in the band department for the next hunt. I too have been duck hunting for 45 years and have yet to collect a band. You have given me hope.

    Hull Trash

Not a turd but one time I found a half-filled water bottle in the blind that had a yellow liquid in it. You and I know what it was but I didn't do any "testing" to confirm it. It had to be though, the color was a match. I mean, come on man (to borrow a phrase) piss in the bushes. What in...

    Hull Trash

This is one of my pet peeves. On our last hunt, the blind we had was almost immaculate. Kudos to the hunters that had that blind prior to us. We only found two empty shells and they were obviously ones missed because the previous hunters' gun threw them in oddball places and they just missed...

    Non listed duck limits?

Those are listed with their specific limits in the regulations. I'm pretty sure he was asking about ducks that aren't listed specifically, like, for example, shovelers. If their species isn't listed in the regulations then the limit is 7 either sex.

    Wister 12/1

Wister puts out their kill sheet for Wed., Sat., and Sun. on Sunday night or Monday so the earliest you'll see Wednesday's count is Sunday night. If someone knows anyone down there maybe you'd want to mention it would be nice to get them the evening of or at least the day after each hunt day.

    Alec Baldwin…..Change my Mind

I've never understood hunting with your safety off. Unless you're walking around with your gun shouldered, ready to fire, at all times, it doesn't save any time over having the safety on and clicking it off as you raise the gun to your shoulder. If you have any coordination at all by the time...
