    NEW TO ME DOG

With vey few exceptions all of the CBP and USBP detection K9's are trained for passive indication. Sit and stare at the source of the trained odor, very similar to a pointer. With that being said, teaching that dog a new odor shouldn't take too much if he still has the hunt and prey drive...

    No deer today but...

As Hemingway said- “There is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter.”

    More chukar

Are the Chukar numbers down? Or more to the point, are the quail numbers decent in areas that are also frequented by chukar? And, what's the nearest chukar hunting to San Diego?

    Long Range Upland Hunting

Definitely agree with playing around with your shot size. I've started reloading with mostly #7's, using them for everything from targets to dove and quail. They give just a little more size/downrange energy with out cutting down too much on pellet count. I've seen some nickel or copper plated...

    Long Range Upland Hunting

Full choke on Dove and quail seems like overkill to me. Yes the longer shots will be more effective, but the close shots are going to result in some really mangled meat. I'm mostly shooting a choke that's more open than Modified when I have the option of choke tubes. I shoot sub-gauges for...

    SD Quail Counts/Scouting?

I think that the last several years of sub-par rainfall have really caught up to the quail population. There just hasn't been enough rainfall to fill the seasonal waterholes, most of the creeks haven't flowed in several years. This has to concentrate the birds near what water there is, making...

    SD Quail Counts/Scouting?

I've certainly given it some thought, that's why we've hunted different areas every day. I'm still feeling things out, are the coveys small because it's still early in the season? Are the high daytime temps keeping the birds from foraging as much as when it gets colder? Or are our fears...

    SD Quail Counts/Scouting?

Two more today near Descanso, but it took 2 guys, hunting/hiking 5+ hrs and covering over 8 miles each. Not a good sign of things to come. And this is an area that I've done well at before, in fact I closed the season there last year and had good numbers still. Oh well, better than being at work.

    SD Quail Counts/Scouting?

These things are more rare than an honest politician, got this guy near Jamul today. Lot of armed hiking going on this year.

    SD Quail Counts/Scouting?

Camped and hunted a combination of Private and Public land near Campo and had similar bird behavior. We did find a few covey's, nothing huge this early, but some about 15 birds. Problem was they flushed so far out and never stopped running once they landed. Very few late or back flushes...

    SD Quail Counts/Scouting?

I am not seeing very good numbers at all this year in my usual travels. I suspect the fact that the seasonal ponds and creeks haven't filled or flowed in at least two years is having a huge impact. It also seemed like the fog and marine layer wasn't pushing as far east this spring as it should...

    38 super

Hey man, I forgot all about that ammo trade, couldn't figure out why I had a box of 38 Specials sitting in my truck last week. How do I get in touch with you to swap boxes? I'm out near lake Jennings, but I'll be off on Sunday the 25th or available in the evenings to meet you somewhere. Derrick

    BLM Shooting

In addition to the above advice, DON'T shoot trees or use trees as target holders. There aren't that many oaks left in some areas after the fires, the deer need the acorns and the turkeys need roost trees. Buy some target stands or come up with another holder. I grab a bunch of the front yard...

I hated for this day to come..

Looks like a great dog that had a great run, sorry for your loss, cherish the memories. "I believe it is the inalienable right of every boy to have a dog for his very own, and if he is to hunt with one later in life the early lessons he learns will be invaluable to him." Burton L. Spiller...
