We just got back from our annual trip to Utah. This year was just a boy’s trip with me, my two brothers and my 14 year old nephew. We didn’t take a lot of pictures, but the ones we did take had fur. I hunted high up the mountain and down low and saw bucks in both. One afternoon while walking into my stand I had 7 cow elk bedded under my stand and in front of my camera, but I didn’t have an elk tag. Hunting those big bucks takes a lot of work and long days. We did those long days for the first few days then decided to relax, have a drink, a campfire, play some guitar, and not be so picky. We were on our vacation…………… So after passing on a few bucks Saturday and Sunday. I decided I’d shoot the first decent 2x2 I see. Then I’d call coyote’s for the rest of the week. Monday afternoon I stopped by our friends camp to check in with Earl, his wife Mary and CBH president Wayne. They were all hunting for elk (cow or spike). Wayne had just shot a nice size cow and came back to camp to get help with hauling it out. I stopped by my camp to pick up my frame pack and my nephew and headed down to help them. On our way, I spot a bedded buck and decided to put quick stalk on. I got to 42 yards before he spotted me and stood up. He was broadside when I shot him and the Rage was a complete pass through and then stuck in a tree. I had my nephew do the whole blood-trail and we found the buck and the bottom of the hill in the river bed. Not long after that Earl and Wayne came by with half of an elk on the front of each ATV.

The next morning I went out for coyote’s with my nephew. We called one in right to the caller. When he smelled it he jumped and ran back the same way. I quickly shot him on the run while my nephew was shooting the video. He was the biggest yote I had ever seen up close. The .204 blew off his whole leg, then I followed up with another shot.

I went out for an afternoon hunt with my younger brother. We called in one coyote and it stopped at 120 yards with just her head looking right up the hill toward me and the decoy. I squeezed one off and missed ????? What ???????? She ran fast to my left and I pulled again and sent her into a sagebrush summersault. My brothers said “What the hell was that? You miss the standing still head shot but pull off another running one. ”
Yote #3 A tip from a friend / local sends me to the other side of the highway and over a hill. I set up by myself and I’m rushed to beat the sun going down. The wind direction is not the best for where I think they will be coming from but I set up anyway. Only 30 seconds into the pup in distress call I had two running in but then winded me and turned around. One went left and out of view and the other ran out to 200 yards and over the hill. When he reached the top I shot and he went out of view. I assumed it was a miss until I could hear him yelp. I walk over the hill and he jumped up and hobbled away. I shot again and he was down.
I was getting more excited about the coyotes than the deer this year!
Final Count for us and our friends.
3 2x2 bucks
2 cow elk
1 2x1 spike elk
3 coyote's
