2018 X9a

You wont draw X9a with out 5 points unless it is in the random according to gohunt. You never know they could increase the tag limit in x9a next year but I wouldn't count on it. With the lower tag limit some monsters should start coming out of x9a in the next couple of years. I won't draw until 2021 since I only have 3 points that's if 5 points will still be enough.

At this point I’m in a cross road, I dont know if I should use my 5 points in 2019 on x9a or hold out and gain more points.

I am not 100% on this but I believe when they make tag adjustments they stick with whatever the change was for a minimum of three years before considering change again. Someone feel free to correct me, I can’t remember where I read that. Next year would be the third year of the reduced tag numbers so the following year would be the first year they would consider bringing it up again if that is true.

Go kill a buck. You will go into no mans land after this year. X9A is rad you will love the hunt.

This is my thought though, I can hunt out of state every year why should I blow my five points on X9 a win in 10 years I’ll have 15 points and I’ll be 40 years old with a Lotta years left to hopefully draw G3

Screw that go hunt X9a 3 times in the next 15 years. Just be picky and hold out for a big buck if you can spend a week up there you will get a good buck. Even with max points you still won’t draw G3 max points only give you like 1.2% odds of drawing. If you want a big buck go out of state UT, CO, AZ, NV etc you can get on a hunt with a few points and have a chance at a buck over 160 in those states if you look hard enough and do enough research. Great example is NBK UT hunt this year those bucks were massive and that isn’t even a premium unit. X9a is a great experience you won’t regret it. If anything put G3 as your first choice when building points and maybe you will get a random.

Makes sense I like what your saying!

X5 on Truducts point.... there was a time when I hunted X9A 3 times in 4 or 5 years. Part of that was jumping around on 2 seperate parties and also a random quota year. Points to draw was lower then too.

If you arent all in for max points in CA there is no point in waiting. All you are doing is hoping for the random quota every year for tags like G3.

X9A has some great bucks if you can hold out and hunt hard. Nothing in X9A is bigger than a buck you could just stumble onto here in CO. Every unit has great bucks.

The only thing CA has are Tule Elk. Outside of that, you can hunt every other species in any neighboring state every single year.

Of course the cost increases as you head out of state, so that is something to consider. $30 resident elk tags are nice...

I will say this about X9A, it was a fun hunt. I hunted hard, with tons of miles in on my boots and 3 trips scouting. I saw plenty of bucks, passed on bucks bigger then the one I killed. It was very tough finding mature deer. We hunted up to almost 5 miles in from any roads. From everyone I have talked to they say it is one of the worst years they have seen in regards to the quality of bucks.

With that said, I believe with the amount of immature bucks that we saw, the next few years should be a good hunt.

Also, 15x Bino’s are HIGHLY recommended.

I don’t want to draw x9a next year I already have a couple out of state hunts planned and so after next year I will be sitting on 5 points and hopefully the year after that I will draw it if the unit doesn’t have point creep
