A22 Forky Down

Spent yesterday cleaning gear, going over the hunt, and getting ready for D16.
That's how you tell the tale of your hunt!
I love the ups and downs
Thank you! It was quite the emotional roller coaster. I didn't mention this above, but after getting so close Saturday morning, I had a few more drinks than I meant to Saturday night. I was hung over af on Sunday and wasn't sure I wanted to go back out. I had a couple of MtnOps Ignites and felt well-enough to get moving but wasn't really feeling it. As I was loading my gear into the truck, a neighborhood kid rode up on his bike and asked if I was going hunting again. (He knew about Saturday morning) I told him, "Yeah, I think so. I'm kind of tired though." He looked at me and said, "You're going to get him this time Mr. Barber. I just know it." The little dude was right. He'll be getting some brauts or sausage when it's done.

Great ending to your hunt story...See if that kids parents will let him tag along with you...Nothing better than getting a youngster into hunting.

ps...They have strong backs too...lol

He's a little young yet, but his older sister has asked if she can go sometime. If anyone from that family is going to be a hunter (other than the dad who already hunts) it's her. She's a very determined young lady and a very good shot with the 22 pellet gun. I promised to take her out scouting next Spring. If she does well with that, I'll take her on a hunt.

One other thing I want to add to this post, Lessons Learned. What I learned from this hunt was to BE PREPARED TO SUCCEED. I was not, which kind of sucked.

I had eaten a late breakfast and wasn't hungry when I left my house. I didn't think it would be a big deal as I would be home by 730 or 8 for dinner so I didn't have any food with me. BAD IDEA. I also only brought along enough water to get me through the hunt. That meant I had next to no water or food for the processing of the deer.

Recovering, tagging, registering the kill, and processing a deer takes longer than the 7-15 minutes it does in in the youtube videos. I shot the deer around 6:40 pm. I did not get home until about 11:45 pm, five hours later. During that time I had a small bottle of water that had been rolling around in my truck for who knows how long and a Clif Protein bar I picked up at the gas station when I got ice for my cooler. That sucked. I cannot imagine how much worse that would have sucked if I had shot the deer somewhere I had to break it down first and then pack it out.

From now on I will plan to succeed. That means I will have enough water and food to last me 4-5 hours after last light. (A liter of water or two and a couple of protein bars would likely be plenty.) I am also adding a small but powerful flashlight for tracking. My headlamp is bright, but it is inadequate for tracking at night. I also will be adding a 20' length of rope for stringing up a deer from a tree. It makes cleaning and quartering so much easier.

If anyone has anything to add that they think should be considered when planning to succeed, I want to hear it.

Just remember those girls can hunt as good as those boys any day
Coming from a father of 4 girls. IMO

Fo shizzle. My daughter has accompanied me quite a few times. She's a vegetarian and wants to be a vet. She wants me to get another deer so she can help me process it. :joy: :joy:
