Here is the short version
Earlier this week I was asked to play guide for a buddy from my old church and his two kids, but his son was the only one shooting.
So this morning the birds were roosted in an orchard that we couldn't hunt, so we set up as close to them as possible, right on the boundary, but couldn't seal the deal. As they were heading away from us we circled to get close to where they were heading.
In our second set up my first series few series of yelps received no response, after about 15 min of no gobbles, my hunter hears a faint gobble, so I hit him again and 2 birds fire right back. As I continue to call, they are moving closer and closer, and then we spot 2 of them running at us, I tell my hunter to get his gun up and wait til they cross the fence before shooting. Now they are 50 yards away just on the other side of this knoll struttin and gobblin, one more soft series of yelps brings them to the fence line about 30 yards away, after a intense stare down and more gobbling they cross the fence and start struttin right in front of our set up at under 20 yards.
I tell him to shoot and the gobbler instantly drops
20lber, 9 1/2" beard and 1 1/8' sharp spurs, not bad for a first gobbler and first turkey hunt for all of them!!!
God Bless
