Steve, You are on the right track just take your time and slowly work in closer. One of the things we do is to have the gunner off in the distance and the handler in close with the dog , We'll put a wing clip bird down and let the dog play with it while the handler signals the gunner to cap the gun. Over time (several days) we move closer and closer with the starter pistol. Once we are comfortable that the dog is good with that we go to .410 shotgun at a distance and do the same thing working in closer over time. Just remember do it slowly if you gun shy a dog it many times is not fixable.
