Hello all,
I'm planning on going on my first coyote hunt on sunday. I was thinking of trying out the agua tibia wilderness in CNF. anybody ever have any luck there?

I already have a hunt planned for this weekend. Otherwise, I'd be down. Good luck!

There are coyotes in there, used to camp at Dripping Springs a good deal. However it is thick with heave brush in that area. there are a few spots you can set up but you will have to find them...

Thank you everyone, yeah I figured I might has well try it out over there. I heard there are quite a few mountain lions in the area also so one of my buddies is going to join me. He doesn't have a license so he'll be unarmed but an extra pair of eyes can help avoid any dangerous situations.

if it is thick bring a 12ga with a full choke. Buy dead coyote rounds or winchester xtended range coyote both in 3" magnum. IF you dont want to spend the money you can all ways use #4 buck. It makes it fun they come flying in and you are shooting a moving yote with a shotgun.

You could have your friend carry the shotgun & you can carry a rifle. So, you could have access to both short & long range shooting......I think as long as he's not shooting or hunting he can carry......I'd have it unloaded, while he's walking. Although, it may be legal for that as well.

ilovesprig, I've heard a lot of wardens and rangers watching hunters from a distance with binos so I want to be really careful with what they considern "hunting", it seems that hunting can be considered as much as calling for animal or having any participation in the hunt other than watching. But we'll see, I think the safest way is to keep the shotgun unloaded for him to carry, and once we're in a stand we can load it up and ill lay it down by me.

Probably better safe than sorry with your friend carrying. Give him a knife and that's it. Before I was a hunter, I went to an upland field with my buddy and DFG stopped him to check his gun and what not. The warden said he was watching us for a while to make sure the gun was not in my hands. Supposedly there is a very big cat back there so watch for tracks and your backs.

Scouted out San Mateo wilderness last week, it is very thick, but definitely doable. Hope you were ready for a long hike. Good luck, hope you knab some dogs!

man, it was miserable over there, we parked at a campsite and walked for 2 miles, and we just couldn't find a clearing of teh thick stuff. we end up making a stand in a wash and called for 30 mins or so, no coyotes but we got to see a couple deer. Ended up going on some blm land down the road. TONS of big lion tracks and coyote tracks, just couldnt get them to come in.

I used to hike the Dripping springs trails. It gets a lot of traffic on weekends and very few places to trek off the trail. I've been scouting San Mateo the last two weeks as well, no sight or response to my calls but saw some scat (deer and coyote) here and there. A little easier to get off trail, but looks like other hunters are making the 'mini trails'.
If you need a weekday wing man let me know. Good luck!

thanks rbduffer, Im gonna be trying to go out at least every weekend.
I was also looking to try out san mateo but heard its pretty rough there too, I might just start going out to the desert past indio... im looking into getting a foxpro too, doing hand calls for hours got really tiresome haha

Keep in mind, if you're planning on going every weekend, make sure you have enough spots to cycle through to allow locations to rest. You don't want to be going to the same stands with the same calls every week.
