Many previous day’s failures led to today’s success. I am very grateful for my good fortune.

It was rainy, cold and low visibility. He only bounded once after the shot. Stood for a moment, then fell.

Hornady CX in 6.5 PRC worked well. He was front shot. It very much blew up his heart but lodged in rear leg and never exited.

Thanks Wildlife Officer Battles for certifying my buck and sharing some critical post hunt tagging information.

Shout out to Sprig and the SCH community. This forum is important. Especially for a novice like myself learning along the way. Thanks for giving us a place to share and learn from each other. I hope to pass down a hunting tradition (and pile of weapons!) to my kids that I never inherited myself.

After previously processing a hog and deer in my kitchen at home, I treated myself (and my wife!) to professional butcher shop processing this time.

Dropped off my buck at Bisher’s in Ramona on Sunday. Picked up 62 lbs of venison yesterday. My freezer got its sexy back!

I also cleaned up my buck skull. It turned out beautiful. I’m looking forward to adding him to my memory wall sometime soon.IMG_9857.jpegIMG_9855.jpegIMG_9856.jpeg

No shame in that!! I got my first deer and elk processed this season and my buddy who does his own stuff was surprised how much meat I actually got back. Granted I dropped my deer off skinned but whole and elk skinnedd and quartered into 4 pieces so little goes to waste that way.

Skull looks great. I tried to keep my lower mandible whole but it ended up splitting. Working on a mount for my skull. Wanted to make something special for my first buck.
