Took Dash out for his first Deer hunt of the season in D6. Here he is watching 2 fawns cross a road.
I did take him Deer hunting last year when he was just 5 month old. But that was just to have him out.
Since most of what we have done, since I got him last year is bird training. He works relatively close. So I'll be working with him to start hunting further out from me. I'll end up using him to push Deer out of thick brush and in the ravines/finger's, & tracking.
Hoping next year to get him some work on Pigs.
He definitely get’s crazy excited. Last year he barked at every deer saw, especially the doe’s that just stood there staring at him. He’s gotten a lot better. He didn’t bark at any of the deer we saw in D6. But I wouldn’t put it past him. He also ran 2 young bucks during the summer. That was a little intense since I didn’t have his GPS collar on.
Are you going to have cooper on a lead or free?
Sounds like a good plan. You say you will use him to push deer, I haven't seen that on the west coast I have only seen that in the southeast with running hounds. Pretty cool and good luck.

Cool breed but...I strongly advise you to contain his behavior and train him to respond as you would want him to otherwise he very well will chase or bark at everything you encounter. He's a terrier and they go to ground when they find game. It's in their DNA, It's what they were bred do...
They are silent on the track and don't go to ground unless you train them at 29lbs he's a little big for that.
I can run hogs in the am, quail hunt at lunch and blood track at night all with the same dog in the same day.
Ben, just get him out there he needs the experience and he will learn from his mistakes. Bowie picked up upland after 3 hunts, another litter mate picked up herding cattle over the weekend. Get him out there and he'll figure it out along with you.

Im going let him run with the Ecollar on. I have spent alot of time training him in the hills near my home and he is pretty obedient in coming to me and sitting and staying. Even when other dogs are nearby. The plan is to hunt like Mark suggested = Deer in the morning, quail in the afternoon. We will be out for 3 days, so he should do well. I will take my 30 ft lead just in case he scares off the monster buck, but this will be a fun trip for both of us. If we get a deer, it will be the first for both of us
I didn't purposely have him run those 2 buck's. He found them on his own and when they took off so did he.
I wasn't expecting any deer to be in this particular area in the middle of summer.

Find fresh tracks or bedding area and get him to smell and work the area using find the deer or what ever command for deer. Try to be patient with him and use vibrate first then shock.
He first needs to learn what they smell, look & sound like. the jagds use every sense not just their nose.
Find someone who's killed a buck and get a tarsal and your training will go much better. Stop at deer camps ask and also see if they have any deer that need blood tracking.
Start at the first good blood and tell him to track or find the blood on a lead until you see he's on it then just let him do his thing if he losses the track go back to the good blood and start over.
If you find someone who has killed a buck your training will be short. Let him bite on it and just get him excited while your using your deer command.
Just watch the heat don't let him overheat after a good run just let him rest until he's not panting. Give him Gatorade if he shows signs of over heating and if you have a Creek or cooler with ice water let him jump in or if your near the truck turn the AC on and get the vent in his mouth
