There was a recommendation of adding wigeon to my spread at henshaw but I want to know if it would be better to have a small number of widgeon or a larger number of mallards. I’m seeing deals on bulk mallards sets but wigeon seem more specialized and are pricier.

Considering that I have to work on a budget would I be better off just adding more mallards this year? I could get about two dozen for the price I am seeing wigeon going for just 6.

Henshaw is pretty much about the Wigeon. Get some full body Wigeons as well. I would definitely have some Mallards in the spread along with Green Wing Teal.

I would go the mallard route . I feel more decoys are better . I want it to look like a party from the air . And every one loves a party . If there is no wind I will run less decoys .

I have 12 mallard and 6 gwt. Walmart has flambeau 12 packs of mallard for about $45 and gwt 6 packs for $24 (rollback).

I see sportsman’s warehouse has flambeau wigeon 6 for $45.

Shell out the dough for 2 dozen wigeon and have the best of both worlds.

As they say in fly fishing - match the hatch. Go with the matching decoy and in the numbers you are seeing them in. Give them what they are used to seeing and use motion dec's as much as is legal. Thats been my experience. Have'nt shot waterfowl in awhile but that worked for me when I did. got taught by some folks way back when who are still around this forum and others who are now gone..

Look at Trigs set up. See how many standing decoys he has set up and how they are set? Standing decoys really add a lot. I am not a big fan of Mojos but you need to run them at Henshaw.

That shaw place looks tough to hunt

just a little observation .... I love hunting widgeon, They might be my fav duck. What i have noticed in my decoy spreads is other ducks hate landing near them. if i have a big spread out 5 or 6 doz and my cotton tops are segregated to one side the other ducks will land as far away as they can.

only thing i can figure is that the lil guys are mean. If you watch them fly or feed they are always mixing it up.
